Gulf Air Suspends New Paris Flight

Fri Oct 20, 2006 3:51 am

Hi,

I would like to inform you that Gulf Air has suspended with immediate effect their new 4 weekly A 332 nonstop flights between Muscat and Paris.

These flights started in July 2006 and were making massive losses.

No new additional flights to LHR/CDG/FRA are being planned as a subsitute for the time being.

Most likely the A 332 used for MCT-CDG will be utilized to operate extra flights during the Dec-Jan HAJJ SEASON.

This sure doesn't sound good for GF..maybe this is the reason why Hogan decided to bolt over to EY..he probably saw something like this coming..

I hope GF steps up to the challenges they have on multiple levels...

GF has no plans for AMS what so ever.

the biggest problem for GF is that they have failed to expand internationally like QR-EK and EY have over the last few years hence their market share has dropped to many destinations especially to their core markets i.e. India and Karachi.

GF also flies an A 320 daily BAH-MCT-BOM which I dont know why as such a flight will never make money due to the operational costs of the route...they still fly BAH-MCT-CCU twice a week A 320...CCU has been officially acknowledged as a loss making route and yet still flown!

Even to MAA, some flights are with a B 763 BAH-MCT-MAA!!!

And now GF 18 which was a nonstop BAH-CDG A 332 daily operation has become MCT-BAH-CDG!!!

Behramjee,

As you seem to have some sound inside info on GF, any idea how they're doing on their Bahrain-Dublin route. Many people seem to be wondering about this on the Irish threads. Would appreciate any info if you have any.

Thanks.

Currently the only route beating it's target, it has been a real money machine.

If KL would allow it yes

CDG MCT was his stupid idea. No loss for GF that he ran over to EY.
It was known before it was started that it had very little connex.

He did do a decent job at GF for years, maybe his last decision was a bad one...

I hope GF does well though.. checkmark ...

Apparently, the idea of a two hub is really loss-making. Having one hub will really boast its profit. But, of course that is not possible in this case--at least at the time being.

Why not? Why not have BAH as the only "home base" and build everything around from there..not to mention, increase tourism, finance, etc.....

Maybe because Oman as a shareholder in GF would not allow MCT being relegated to a focus city?

If Omanair picks up (which is still a while away since it's not as strongly financed as QR or EY), Oman will leave GF and then they can focus on BAH.

Actually, having two hubs is apparently very confusing for the airline. You might not see it, but it really does complicate things A LOT! Thoughout the years, with GF having four hubs really put a damper on profits. Also, spreading the resources over two cities and connecting the two for routes/frequencies will add stain for the GF finanicial situation.

Right on. If BAH took the largest piece of the pie, Oman would certainly object. Back when DOH was shareholding, it was obligated to pay the same share; however, it had considerably less nonstop flights to certain destinations than neighboring BAH.

Behramjee, you cannot denie that this destination has NOT been talked about this year, same as Shanghai, I' am not saying it's confirmed or anything, but the rumours still exist.
And I currently hear Casablanca is a possibility.

BTW, further rumours include a stop of the SYD leg (rumour for months now) and apparently the JNB is not a succes as well.

This seems like a sheikout of the flight programme. I know when I am looking for connections with GF to the UAE states they are really dreadful with extended waits and long connections in both directions. It does seem a pity that the states cannot get together and run a code share programme.

No mate, they have a daily early morning B763 from BAH-BOM [i have been on that], A Morning A320 flight that you mentioned above to MCT and an evening A320 on BOM-BAH sector---

No idea about the loads though but when i flew BOM-BAH [5J and Full in Y] and while comin back it was oversold in both classes.

Any plans for increasing DUB flights? I know that when GF started the route that there were several rumours that DUB would eventually see 5 weekly flights. Maybe 2 more flights a week could be connected to the SYD flight meaning that passengers don't have to stay a night in Bahrain going there?

Are first and business class succesfull on the DUB flights?

How are the JNB services going?

Speaking from opinion, not fact, GF would have to sell seats on a DUB-BAH-SYD route very cheaply as the SYD flight still goes through SIN if I read the routemap correctly. Doing that many jumps when EI and EK have agreed to start connecting in DXB on a 1 stop to SYD/MEL and PER makes no sense from a PAX point of view.
(And the new Winter DUB-DXB flights mean pax have a transfer of about 2.5hrs in DXB for onward OZ and Asia flights which is very good.)
Aircraft I've flown: A300/A310/A320/A321/A330/A340/B727/B732/B733/B734/B735/B738/B741/B742/B744/DC10/MD80/IL62/Bae146/AR

That's my point bro'..to make have GF focus on one hub.... Wink

Sure, I have no problems with either Oman or Bahrain solving this..someone needs to "let go"..otherwise both (as well as GF) will lose...maybe Oman could be a "quiet" investor in GF (or vice-versa)....if GF does well, then Oman (Bahrain) makes money too... Smile

Flew to BAH recently from DXB for the first time. Out of all the gulf countries, I must say that Bahrain is the least attractive. They airport was definetely a disapointment compared to DXB, DOH or DMM. And what's with "toll fee" at the airport. First time I had to pay to enter a country. These maybe a few reasons why GF is not as successful or is losing marketshare.

Going from a three hub to one hub would have been too big of step. Few issues why MCT is still in the game ;

- BAH itself does not have sufficient bilaterals to run a one hub operation with the fleet size of GF

- BAH gvt is sick of pooring money into GF and taking the ttl share was and still for sure not on their agenda. The only reason why they keep it alive is that 20% of BAH workforce works at GF.

- Omanair is at least 10 years away from being anything close to a decent carrier, but MCT govt has not been too happy either.

SYD reduction will not go ahead. JNB had a rough start but is no on it's feet and making money allbeit little

5 a week is on the plan but not sure bilateral might be an issue ...
