Does Conviasa Have To Do Anything With Viasa?

Fri Oct 20, 2006 10:57 pm

Hi folks,
I have heard a lot about Conviasa . The tail on the livery is also orange like with Viasa.
1)Is this airline a new attempt to restart a national airline like viasa was or is it some private group that bought the name Viasa and modiifed it so as to give it a distinct identity ?

2)Since when does this new airline exist?

thanks in advance

Regards

As Viasa, Conviasa is also state-owned. The govt didn't want to restart Viasa because it would have to deal with all the debts and employee pensions that Viasa had when it died, so they picked the "Conviasa" name.

This "new" airline started ops in 2004.

Conviaso and Viaso are arch enemies, two sides of the same coin. They considered the name Bizarro Viaso, but cooler heads prevailed, and those who proposed that name were shot.

Grenada is indeed a niche market. Only certain airlines can make it there. Imagine of all the places in the Caribbean, Conviasa flies, GND and POS are the only two. Conviasa started GND when the airline just opened and had one DHC7. I remember meeting the flights, and trying to communicate with those pretty Venezuelan Flight Attendants. Now that I can speak better Spanish I need to go back to that job.. Big grin

I assume the Gov't pumps a good bit of money into Conviasa, cause from a Dash 7 to their current fleet which includes 737s and A340s, I think the airline grew rather quickly.

When you add the prefix CON to a word, you get the meaning against, anti, not, among others.

So the name means: NOT VIASO, or ANTI-VIASO. Thus the arch enemy.

Bizarro comes from comic books. The Bizarro world is a parallel yet opposite world. There was even a "Bizarro" episode of the TV show Seinfeld, where the gang ran into a same yet opposite group of people like themselves...

It was just a joke!

Viasa and Con-viasa? My spanish is bad but maybe the wordplay doesn't work out.. The reference is to the idea in comic books where people go into an alternate universe that's exactly opposite to the one they came from.

I was actually going to post something similiar. Big grin

Check Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conviasa

Conviasa (Consorcio Venezolano de Industrias Aeronauticas y Servicios Aereos) is a Venezuelan state-owned airline based in Porlamar on Venezuela's Margarita Island. It plans to fly to international destinations in the Caribbean, South America, Germany, France, and Spain.

Considering that it is a Venezuelan airline, I think we need to think in spanish. In the case, CON means WITH, and that just blows a hole in your theory..:D

Sorry

Sorry, you must be confused, which also shows in your persistent use of ViasO instead of ViasA Do not mix up the prefix 'con-' with 'contra' the latter does mean 'against' but 'con' means 'with' as Captaink already pointed out.

Once more, Google came to the rescue :

BTW Rootsair did your seating problems on KL to LIM get solved after all?

I think in Spanish con means with, and maybe in the context of this airline, it means yes we're the same airline, just a different name to escape our past responsibilities.

Sorry, but in this case CON means Consorcio, as it is an acronym.

And CON as a prefix means "with" in English to, but CON alone is slang for against, anti, etc.

Anyway, it was a joke, and this is an english language forum, and just stop taking things so seriously! There are more important things to discuss, like why Airbus is way better than Boeing, right?!

Didn't take you seriously dude, I was just having fun blowing up your theory, joking as well.

Yeah I like your idea for a topic, but it is clear that Boeing is better. But we better not start before we kicked of a.net or something. Big grin

Speaking of being kicked off, you'd better watch it. I was banned last week for 3 days for posting a silly comment. Oh yeah, they are watching..... I went through some serious withdrawal, I couldn't get my fix for 3 days. It seemed an eternity....

VIASA was great, a great airliner but sadly, very poor managed.

Conviasa is not even close of what Viasa was in its great years but apparently little by little they are putting their sh..* together.

All I can say about Conviasa is I just felt like giving them a try for the first time CCS-BLA-CCS this same week finishing today. Big mistake.

Everything - I mean everything, apart from actually getting from point A to B and then back to A without falling down from the sky, went wrong. Making a reservation was a nightmare (you will notice the website ONLY provides flight information but you cannot reserve - much less purchase tickets on-line); both flights were horribly delayed, planes were aging and dirty, ground and on-board crew had an attitude -"hello", "please", "thank you" or "you are welcome" do not belong to their vocabulary, even for responding-, and the point of sale in CCS was down, which forced me to pay for my ticket in cash right then and there at the counter. If you don't want to be ripped off, then you must change your hard currency to Bolívares in the rampant black market - with all the risks this entail.

The 3- hour delay in the return flight made me loose my connection with CM to PTY. Try getting a place to stay overnight in Maiquetía on Friday night without prior reservations! NOTHING had an opening. My choices were try to exit via BOG, make the 2-3 hour trip to Caracas only to come back early next morning, or stay the night in a cafeteria bench with all my luggage.

In case you're wondering, I chose BOG - which added an extra $300 to my trip cost. And this, only after making the standby list after the flight had closed. Oh, well...

Conviasa, never again.

Greetings to you, my friend.

Indeed, the little I got to see from Venezuela this time is quite different from what I remember from a few years ago - most specially the mood of the people.

A couple of positive notes, notwithstanding: the new sections of CCS international terminal are fantastic, elegant and functional (I arrived to CCS at 7:00 in MX's nonstop flight from MEX); amongst the best I have seen regarding airports worldwide. Also, I got to tour the new Guanta model customhouse. It is amazing what the SENIAT has done there in terms of technology and investment - let's hope it is put to good use.

But people do not look happy, as they used to a few years back. What has that monkey done to the famous Venezuelan smiles?

Regards,

Actually I 've had great experiences with them flying to PMV and MAR. Great service, always on time. The only thing is that I can't book online, I had to go to a travel agency, but they are working on that.
