There's one of those go-cart/video arcade places adjacent to I-35E here in Dallas that did something similar a few years ago. The had pretty much the whole fuselage of one of those old Sikorsky S-55C helicopers, and they had the thing on its side, with the tail boom and rotor blades scattered around. They had it rigged with some yellow/orange lights inside (to simulate fire) and some CO2 or theatrical smoke, and when they fired all these items up (especially at night) it looked quite realistic. More than one motorist on 35E called it in to 911, and DAL
tower also got a few calls, since the site was on about a 3-mile final for 13R.
