Pan Am V? Logo On "Galactica" Last Night

Sun Oct 22, 2006 5:28 am

On last night's episode of "Battlestar Galactica", one of the Colonial ships lifting off from the planet clearly has a logo on the bottom based on the PanAm globe - the blue globe and white lines are identical, font is the Pan Am logo font, left side says "Pan." I couldn't make out the right - it's three letters, looks like "OAL" or maybe "BAL."

It's amazing that even so long after the real Pan Am disappeared, memories of it still fire the imagination. Of course, since it's science fiction here, it could also be a shout-out to "2001: A Space Odyssey" and it's Pan Am orbiter.

I saw that as well, I just saw the logo. I was watching on an HDTV, but SciFi doesn't broadcast in HD, so what I saw looked like crap, and I couldn't get a good look at the writing within the logo.

Haven't seen last night's episode yet, but it wouldn't surprise me. After all, Colonial One is painted in more or less USA Air Force One colors. Maybe the Cylon attack on the colonies happened before the Colonial Pan Am bankruptcy. Big grin

You see that type of thing all the time in TV. Part of me hopes it was someone with an appreciation of aviation history, but it is just as likely that someone took a know logo and altered it slightly for use here. “Found” items are used all the time in special effects as time savers, especially when they are to be used in shots that are supposed to used at a distance or out of focus.

In a minor geeky aside, I would have to say the shot of the battlestar jumping into the atmosphere, deploying fighters and jumping out before hitting the ground would definitely be in my top 10 list of cool effect shots.

Best wishes,

True, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's more in this case - Ronald Moore is known for that sort of thing. Biggest example is the way in the Galactica opening credits, we see clips from the episode we're about to see...Moore said in an interview once that that's his way of saluting one of his favourite series from the '70s, Space:1999, which did the same thing.

And have to agree, the jimp-in/jump-out sequence is one of the most awesome effects ever. Really wish Sci-Fi was in HD.

If you get Universal HD, they show BSG in HD.

It might be shown in HD, but is it upconverted. The local affiliates here do that, and it looks like crap compared to true HD.

Here's a still from the episode showing the ship in question with its Pan Am-like logo on the underside. I think it says "Pan Gal".

I blinked and I missed it.

"The Sky Is No Longer The Limit!!"  rotfl

I wonder if they were having financial troubles...and were restricted to galactic routes with no domestic feed?

And what are the registration codes for the different colonies?

The most lucrative routes were sold to United Kobol Lines. At the time the Cylons attacked, Pan Gal was nearing shutdown and was rumored to be selling a bunch of routes and ships to Delta Colonial Lines, along with leases to a funky oval-shaped terminal at New Caprica Interplanetary Spaceport.

Also, a larger competitor for the "Olympic Carrier" class ships was under development, but had been subjected to delays due to wiring issues.

Caprica City: CPC
Sagittarion: SGT

And here I was thinking the blue globe might represent "Pan Aerilon Galactic Spaceways" based in Aerilon City (AER).  rotfl

Maybe a Geminese line will have the double yellow globe representing the twin aspect...

I think we could go on for days with this, couldn't we?

A little known fact is that, in addition to their Pacific and South American routes,
United Airlines also bought their Moon and Space Station routes.

I used to be on the Orion shuttle once a week a few years back which earned me Premier Executive 100K status and I was invited into United Solar System Services.

True, but running a half-season behind - they're showing the first part of "Season 2.5" right now. Here's the schedule.
At this rate, we might get the first half of Season 3 on DVD-HD or Bluray before they get to it.

I just looked on Moore's blog to see if he'd mentioned the logo - nothing there, but they do Q&A sessions occasionally and I'll try to submit the question. Did notice something that again shows Moore's love of "shout-outs" and points to the 2001-homage theory: the first human-appearing Cylon was deliberatly given the model number "Six" as a homage to the '60s series The Prisoner.

I happened across another post in a entertainment forum that I occasionally look at, and someone mentioned the Pan AM’ish logo is an homage to one of the ships form the original series. It too carried that logo. So it’s likely a homage to the old show that was paying homage to the airline.

Best wishes,
Mike

I found the following info on the battlestarwiki site under the entry for the "Pan Galactic" ship. Pan Galactic

Quote:
Pan Galactic was a spaceline operating in the Twelve Colonies before the Cylon attack... The livery and name of Pan Galactic is likely based on the airline Pan American (or Pan Am), which ceased operations in 1991. Even the company logo on the underside of the ship is nearly identical to the one of Pan Am.
