Has 727 Ever Operated Out Santa Ana/ John Wayn AP?

Sun Oct 22, 2006 12:11 pm

I know how stricted Santa Ana/ John Wayne Airport is on noise. The Boeing 727 is the type of airliner that who operate out of John Wayne if it was not for one thing, it is loud. My question is was there ever a time that 727 was flying out John Wayne airport? When me and my family would drive by there ( I was younger), all I can remember is 757,737, MD80,MD90, BAe 146/Avro RJ and A320's. So did Santa Ana let 727 say in the 80'or early 90's?

Hughes Airwest flew their 727-2M7's into SNA on a trial basis in 1978/79. The flights proved too noisy and ended a short time later.

Off topic directly, but related to your list of SNA aircraft, you can add B717 service into SNA that was offered by Midwest Airlines nonstop to Kansas City, various A319 operators, and I think FedEx flies in an A300/A310 cargo flight because I remember it parked on the far side of the airport. I am not sure what UPS flies into SNA, but we might be able to add B767 to the list of SNA aircraft also.

I believe PSA flew DC-9s, 737-200s and 727s in there at one time and AirCal flew the 737-100 and 200 into SNA as well. All these jets were pretty loud in their day, before the onset of hush kits. During the 80s however, when the quiter generation 737-300s and MD-80s came on board, stage 2 jets were for the most part, banned from operating at SNA. This, plus the ultra quiet BAE-146 and eventually the 757, were the standard for SNA.

Today at SNA, the 73G, 757 and the A32x dominate the traffic there.

I'll bet not. But yes, RW's timetable did show a 72S for ... a few months? To LAS as I recall.

We sat at the old 94th Aerosquadron restaurant at SNA in the 1970's watching an Aircal 737 doing touch and go's.

I want to say I flew a PSA 727 into SNA, but this would have been in the late 1970s so my memory is very hazy (as I was like 9).

PSA didn't start service to SNA until the early 80's using the DC-9-80 aircraft for service to SFO. Later the 146 became the primary aircraft used by PSA at SNA.

Well there are no 727's in the photo database listed for SNA. I will have to do some digging to see if I can find any pictures elsewere. However there are some 737-200 like this, which have reputation for being loud, in the database:

If I recall, HP used to operate the 732 into SNA back in 02-03.

Its been several years since I have visited SNA, UPS used 757-200s there, and FedEx used the A310. It was nice to be sequenced in behind a "heavy" when I was doing my flight training there.

By 2002-2003 its was all stage 3 into SNA, so it had to be a 733.

Those NIMBY's there need to shut the hell up, or lose the air service. Some of the departure/climb profiles the aircraft are forced to take are downright unsafe, and for what- so some overly rich resident won't hear the jet?  Yeah sure

They had a chance with El Toro to move air ops, but they'd rather that be houses I guess- I stay away from flying into OC whenever possible.

Until deregulation, the only carriers serving SNA were Hughes Air West, Air California, and Golden West. RW flew DC-9's to PHX, LAS, and LAX. As earlier posters stated, they flew 72S's for a few months but discontinued them. AirCal flew 737-100/200's (early models for the most part) as well as Electras. PSA didn't fly to SNA until the early 80's after the terminal was expanded. Golden West flew Twin Otters and later Shorts 330's to Southern California destinations.
