Purdue Learjet?

Good morning to all the Boilermakers out there! Last year I heard rumors of Martin Jischke (President of Purdue) wanting to replace the Purdue Beechjet with a Learjet. Does anybody know if there is any truth to this?

Haven't heard anything like this, but perhaps an AvTech student would know more.

Last I heard of Jischke having anything to do with an airplane was when he dedicated the new 727F the school recieved from FedEx. Apparently the old one was scrapped. Go figure, when I was on board it, it looked like it was being fixed up for gutting. Even found a nylon noose on board...still boggles the mind of me and the other AAEs who toured it.

Anyone want to tell me, meanwhile, why the 737-200 donated from UA long ago smells like it was used to haul animals?

Ya, that was funny about the old UA 727 getting scrapped. All of the flight instructors were salvaging what they could (exit signs, a/c vents, other random placards from the cabin). About the 732, there was a homeland security test performed last year with that airplane where flash bangs were used. I havn't been on that aircraft for more than a year so I'm not quite sure what the smell is. My guess would be that of a decaying airplane!

By the way Boeing4ever, do you know Ben Scott or Doug Link? They graduated last year with BS's in AAE. I decided to stick with AT/Proffessional Flight after I saw their workload!

Speaking of LAF and Purdue: Is there any chance of scheduled commercial air service returning to the airport, or did they give up all hope after RegionsAir (AmericanConnection) left?

It's sorta sad that LAF has no scheduled air service left. To me, the business is there, as the area also has a big Subaru/Toyota auto plant, a huge Caterpillar facility, and the HQ and manufacturing facilities of Wabash National (the 2nd largest semi-truck trailer manufacturer in the US). Maybe the huge LCC presence at IND was too big of a factor... after all, I have friends who live in the LAF area, and they always chose flying out of IND, even back when LAF had air service.

Hi Fellow Boilermakers!

It is possible that a Learjet may be in the school's future, although, there doesn't appear to be any outward evidence that such planning is now underway.

But it might make sense because one of Purdue's distinguished aviation alumni (featured more in the link below) has completed many successful projects to improve various aspects of the renowned business jet. And, there are some definite ties still very active with the school.

It is always interesting to speculate "what if" but the "rumor" might have some truth to it!

From what I have heard, there are NO plans to get a learjet at this time. I think we just don't have the money right now. There are more important AvTech. issues, like upgrading the classroom facilities at the airport.

I'm not saying that buying a Lear would be smart. However, I have heard that Jischke has close ties within Learjet and that he has been wooed in the past to buy from Lear.

I completely agree that any money coming to AT needs to go towards renovating
and expanding classroom facilities at the airport. Why do half the rooms in the AT builing smell like rotting flesh?

(But hey, it's a great school and any prospective students should come here)  Smile

Personally I always thought it was quite excessive that Jischke gets a mansion, his own jet, and $400K/year. I never understood why he, or any college president, should receive all that when there are dilapidated classrooms, sub par TA's who don't speak English teaching most low level classes and hard working prof's not getting paid what they deserve. I say put the money towards the students and the school, not the aristocracy.

To get back to aviation, if Purdue was to get a Learjet what type would they buy? If I had to guess I'd say a Lear 60, good size and available brand new.

Despite my rant Purdue's aviation program is great and I would highly recommend it to any prospective students.

all this talk about jets, what use is the BE20 of theirs then? N200PU shows up in SBN from time to time. i don't recall whether or not i've seen the BE40

Well, the 2 BE20 (king air b200) are used for flights within the Great Lakes region. The BE40 (Beech jet 400) is mainly used for longer flights, and makes a lot of round-trips to Washington DC.

If I recall, there was actually a demonstration of a Lear (no idea what model) to the AvTech department last year at LAF; apparently they were trying to get us to replace our Beechjet. The department was not ultimately interested, however.

And in response to the "foul" smelling 737 (and former 727) interior...I guess that's what happens when you park an airplane out on the ramp for 15+ years and rarely air out the inside. I actually don't think it smells that bad, but that's just me.
Every flight counts.
