Turkish Airlines Will Join The Star Alliance......

Sun Oct 22, 2006 7:10 pm

Hello all

I just read the Aviation Week and Space Technology and it mentions Turkish Airlines will join the Star Alliance before the end of next year. I can't remember if this was discussed before or not?. Sometime next year it looks like they will decide who will join the Star Alliance from India which will join in sometime in 2008. We all know Air China and Shanghai Airlines will join next year. Your comments are appreciate please.

This could definitely be quite good for TK. Since the demise of Qualiflyer group, with Swissair on the leading position, TK haven't took part in any alliance. Possibly, TK could codeshare with LH on flights within Germany, since there is a lot of Turkish nationals living in that EU country, feeding them into major German airports and to Turkey afterwards.

Cheers!

The alliance would defenitely do well for TK. However the latest expansion drift of TK has raised some questions here in IST whether their strategy is the right thing to do. They are still very much under influence of Ankara / politics hence all the expansion to the Gulf, which to date none of these flights make ANY money.

I would welcome TK in Star- defenitely a great airline to have in any alliance.
TK has raised it's service-standards constantly (..but has still some way to go on long-haul..) and the fleet is very young and well maintained.
Specially for Germany it would inevitably raise the question of Code-share with LH ,since Germany is the biggest market for TK outside Turkey.
While Istanbul could be used as hub for Turkey (domestic )and Asia ,Ankara could get some transfer opportunities for ME destinations.
Politics should never interfere in aviation-but that's a quite blue-eyed thought...

interesting little detail tucked away in this article

http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3843863a13,00.html

Wellington and Auckland airports are expected to be criticised for monopolistic behaviour at two high-powered international aviation industry events in Europe.......The airports will be held up as examples of abusing monopoly positions to increase landing fees for airlines at top level conferences in Turkey and Switzerland in December, industry sources say. ...... The world's largest airline grouping, Star Alliance, is expected to use its regular gathering of chief executives from member airlines in Istanbul, Turkey, to wade into the global airport charging debate.

it would seem not beyond the realms of credibility that if Star are holding their next meeting in IST then an announcement may be made about TK joining Star

Why have they not been granted?? I know TK has a ticket office downtown Toronto, and the demand must surely be there as IST is a very big destination with MP, KL, AZ, LH, BA, etc at YYZ...we need more airlines in this overpriced, AC dominated airport!!

TK flies to allmost every airport there is in Germany, and not only to Istanbul. Also there are hundreds of charter airlines that fly almost every combination of city pairs between Germany and Turkey. So even though this will give them even better access to the German market, they are already very well positioned and i don't think they are depending on LH's feed.

I think they are more looking at the longhaul doors this move will open to them. Codesharing with LH, UA, etc. on their intercontinental flights will boost their passenger numbers of international passengers into Turkey.

Initial plans are likely that for LH to focus on its core FRA&MUC markets, while THY will continue to serve and build its market in other German cities such as HAM, STR, CGN, TXL, NUE, HAJ etc..

Turkey and Canada have some ancient air service agreement which only designates Montreal as a service point. THY has for several years now been attempting to get either extra bilateral service authorization to mount Toronto services, or to have the bilateral rewritten.
Unfortunately to date Air Canada has not shown any interest in this which has not encouraged the Canadian government to agree to the Turkish request.

With TK entering Star, I'm sure AC would be more receptive to direct services. Its always been felt AC enjoyed the previous status quo at it preffered to channeled its Turkey destined pax on LH codeshares via FRA/MUC, instead of bleeding traffic off to THY on a direct YYZ service.

With the inauguration of the new Ankara terminal,we maybe can hope to see more direct flights to the Turkish Capital?
They have indicated to handle domestic and international flights in the same terminal, which would simplify connecting services from Europe to other turkish cities,ME and Asia.
By the way,the new Ankara terminal looks great ..

At the moment TK is in the American / BA alliance. Aer Lingus already left. With TK gone it's becoming a pretty limited alliance.

just flew their new A330 in J class and 737-8 in J class, superb seats, though the inflight service misses quite a bit. Not bad service but very basic ....

All the luck to them am sure they will get there ....

TurkishWings:

Regarding IST-YYZ flights, a few months ago the MR. Karlitekin (CEO of TK) has that even they sell all the tickets, they will not have any profit. So that this route is not on their plans.

I don't know if it can be true. But it is what they've told.

TK is not in an alliance with AA/BA. TK only codeshares with AA on certain routes from ORD and JFK. No relationships with BA whatsoever.

At the moment with the high cost of fuel, most of the long haul network is at a loss. The bread and butter for THY is its dense short/medium haul network, which provides better yields than long haul.
In addition the extremely high user fees at YYZ dont help the routes prospects either.

The most probable candidate looks like Air India. It looks like Star Alliance is waiting for the merger between AI and IC to come through next year.

AI already has a partnership with LH and code-share with quite a few Star Alliance carriers (TG, SQ, etc)

That would be considered as slightly insulting for TK,which don't deserve to be treated like a third-ranking airline from Central-Africa...
TK have consistently improved their service offering and their flleet is among the youngest in the Industry.
While there is room for improvement,I see TK in a much better position as many american carriers in terms of fleet-age,financial capabilities and growth potential. They never went into Chapter 11 and had never to be bailed out !!!!

The airport is ready for it but Ankara is not.
It is a very small place, with only Govermental / institutional traffic.
They will have to draw traffic from the Izmir / Denizli area or more south.
This will however come off the IST traffic.

Note that BSP for cities other then IST are a mere 20% of the total.
This goes for pretty much any carrier, TK might be higher but not much.

That wasn't meant to slag TK at all (been to Turkey, loved it), it was meant at Star Alliance.

more fuel for the fire

http://www.atwonline.com/news/story.html?storyID=6958

Turkish Airlines President and CEO Temel Kotil told ATWOnline yesterday in Istanbul that the carrier is moving forward with preparations to join the Star Alliance and expects to achieve full membership by the fourth quarter of 2008 at the latest.

Tokil said Star will benefit from access to a Turkish market with 70 million people and Istanbul's proximity to Central Asia, the Middle East, the Far East and Africa. "We want to make Istanbul a strong hub for Star," he said. "From here we reach 85 capitals in three hours flying time."

Ah, yes.
Just look at some of the members:
Lufthansa
Air Canada
Singapore
South African
Scandinavian
United
Thai

Yeah, that's a town bike alright. Or maybe not? In my humble opinion, these are some of the best airlines in the world. If they feel that TK can deliver the quality Star Alliance customers expect, then by all means...
My personal experience from TK says otherwise.
