American Airlines 727 At PHL Vintage Shot

Mon Oct 23, 2006 4:36 am

Just thought I'd share this with you since there are no other pix like it in the db: An American Airlines 727 (out of service) seen at Philadelphia in May 1994. In addition to this type being out of service, it is my understanding that the TWA building seen in the background was demolished some time ago.

Oh yeah...and TWA is but a memory too.

Thanks for looking.

BTW does anyone know what kind of a presence TWA had at PHL over the years?

A good one since their last connie flight stopped at PHL.

Very nice, Matt.

Does anyone know if AA flew a lot of 727s between PHL and DFW in the mid-80s?

Hi Matt D.

Cool pic - thanks so much for posting it! It sure does bring back sweet memories of spotting - and flying - these wonderful birds.

Ah, for just one more flight...

Like United, TWA once had quite an impressive presence in PHL with service to many cities and a crew base in PHL. Like most other U.S. airports though, after deregulation, both United and TWA retrenched to mostly hub city destination flying.

As for American, they never were that big in PHL. At one time, they did operate several daily wide bodies to SJU and briefly operated to London. Although they still do SJU, the service is now all done by narrow bodies, since US Airways entered into the market and began to grow it.

The TWA hangar was a fixture in PHL for many, many years. It survived many expansions and re-modelings. Through most of the '90's and despite the proud TWA letters that stayed lit until the end, US Air actually occupied the facility as TWA's operation dwindled down. The hangar finally met it demise when the new international terminal opened after 2000.

Prior to UA's merger with Capital, TW was the leading EW carrier out of PHL.

In June of 68, TW had the following service out of PHL
BAL 1x B7F add on from STL and West
ORD 7x B7F -2; 727-2; DC9-1; 880-2
CMH 1x DC9
LAX 2x B7F
PIT 9x 707-1, 880-1, DC9-6, 727-1 - These flights continued on to CVG, CMH, DAY, IND
STL 2x both 727's
SFO 1x B7F

I have a picture of an AA A300 taken at the same spot. Later on tonight, I'll scan and post it.

In the TWA timetable dated 4-27-77 PHL nonstops looked liked this:

ORD x 6 (1 L-1011)
CVG x 1
CMH x 3
IND x 1
LAX x 1
JFK x 2
EWR x 1
PIT x 5
STL x 2
SFO x 1
IAD x 2

So, 25 flights a day, with some weekend exceptions.

ATL was served during the brief hub experiment period in the early 90's.

Interestingly enough, PHL was the one major east coast city not to get a SJU flight when they opened the SJU focus city.

I don't know if i would call this shot vintage but it certainly is from some time ago.

I remember the old TWA hangar, it was demolished to make way for the new A-west.

I remember AA flying a lot of 727's from MIA and SJU. In fact before the 738 came online(and after SJU-PHL was flown with some AB6's which i have never seen) SJU-PHL was 2 daily 727 pretty often.

Well I would on account of the impossibility of replicating that shot today as well as the lack of even similar shots in the database.

Nice shot . The 727 always looked good in A^A polish or United grey in my opinion.
