Are they serving BWI because they did not want to go to Dulles? Also, so they already serve JFK? I never knew there would be so much of a market between Accra and the D.C. area that it would warrant a flight.

Maybe they had to divert due to delays into JFK.....??

They started the BWI route because they did not care to go to Dulles, and BWI has cheaper fuel prices. Also this was not a diversion from JFK, this is a totally new route.

Hi! In a book published in 1996, the author lists Ghana's fleet as 2 DC-10-30 and one DC-9-30 aircraft. Does the airline still fly these three planes? Have they added any more? Also, would you expect new orders form them? Where do they currently fly? Sorry i asked so many questions!

In my 98/99 book, they list Ghana as having 2 DC-10-30's A/C 9G-ANA and 9G-PHN. Also 2 DC-9-51's A/C 9G-ADT and 9G-ADU, and one Fokker F27 Friendship 600 A/C G524/E. I know they fly the new route to BWI and the JFK route but I haven't a clue where else they fly.

One of the DC9s was written off in a crash a few years ago. They fly daily to Heathrow and the service is supposed to be quite good. They don't have any real onward connections so they're no good as a Pan-African carrier (like Ethiopian, Kenyan or Egyptair) but if you're going to Accra then they're as good as anyone else on the route - in my case, I'd probably pick them over BA. I'd certainly take them over Air France via CDG.

Hope the new route works out. Washington DC has a huge Afro-American population, no?

Ghana Airways serves Duesseldorf International, Germany on Monday and Friday for a few years now.
Also they fly to London and Rome.

Do u think that the Dusseldorf flight is successful? They should move to Frankfurt and fly to Accra nonstop.

I think so!
They fly this route for a long time and there are a lot of people flying with them.
The only problem is that everytime the plane arrives too late.

DUS Service And MD-11 Use

Tue Jul 11, 2000 4:29 am

The DUS-FCO-ACC has been very successful for many years, chiefly due to a sizeable West African population and important business centers in the Rhine/ Ruhr Area.
With LH offering a lot of nonstop West Africa destinations from FRA, why should Ghana Airways move to Rhein-Main when they can enjoy a virtual monopoly from DUS? Doesn't really make sense to me.
On a side note, GHA planned to purchase an MD-11 in the late Nineties and even had a picture of it on their website. For some time, they also leased an example from World Airways.
