Cubana IL96 To Toronto?

Tue Oct 24, 2006 11:36 am

I've been looking at taking a trip to Cuba so I can fly on the Il62 and some of its other rarities, and whilst browsing through some schedules on the Cubana site I noticed that they have a weekly flight (on a Sunday) which is due to be operated by an Il96; the routing is Havana-Toronto-Honguin-Havana. I'm just wondering if any Canadian A.netters have heard about this, and if it will actually be operated by the IL96, or the 320's that currently run this route?

Its about $660 Canadian Dollars for a return, which if it is the Illusion, I don't think is that bad for getting three flights on this aircraft type! I can link it in with taking the AI 772 on a return from Birmingham in England, as all the timings work out very well.

Thanks,

How interesting! Never thought that they would fly to Toronto with the 96s. If thats the case, it's simply amazing. The price is also pretty good.
Do a little more research on it. Sorry I don't know anything about it. And if its all true, and you wanna go to Cuba, then this is definitely a great choice of aircraft and airline! Go for it.

Looks very hopeful, I think it said the flight was 5 hours, so a very good price for this length!

Are Cubana flights allowed to overfly the US? HAV-YYZ is 1,247nm, so 5 hours almost makes me wonder if that isn't flying out the atlantic and around the US to YYZ - the way SAA's jets had to fly around Africa on their way to Europe, since they weren't granted overflight during apartheid.

Yes I was wondering that too actually, so I'm afraid I don't know the answer. I was thinking that some flights from say JFK or Miami to Havana would obviously have to make contact with US soil, but they are only charters and I'm not sure if the US would be so keen to have the national airline over its territory.

Yes Cubana transits US airspace.

These things are usually reciprocal, so if US carriers are allowed overflight of Cuba (as they are), I wouldn't know why CU wouldn't be allowed overflight over America.

I saw an video on flightlevel 360.com were they was contacting FAA center, I guess it was New York. I remember also from a flight with Cubana (AOM DC-10) that we was flying very close along the U.S east coast towards HAV.

There is something screwy with the flight durations shown. Havana and Toronto are both in the Eastern Time Zone, so comparing Arrival and Departure times should give the duration. So, 05:35 to 12:50 should be 7 hrs 15 mins. They show 8 hrs 15 mins. Going back: 14:00 to 20:55 should equal 6 hours 55 minutes. They show 5 hours 55 minutes. These numbers would make sens if Havana was Zulu minus 4 hours, and Toronto was Zulu minus 5 hours, which it is. Incidentally, they show 1 stop in both directions.

To explain screwy flight durations, maybe Cuba doesn't participate in daylight savings time.  banghead

If I recall some photo's on A.net, these IL96s sure use alot of runway.

Should be interesting.

Dc10srules is correct. Cuba got rid of DST so therefore, in the winter time, they're an hour ahead of us. This was If I recall correctly, implemented two years ago as a measure to save on energy use (to have as much sun as possible in the evening before switching on the lights basically).

That being said, an IL-96? In YYZ?!? I might just have to go for a week-end in the centre-of-the-world  duck

Toronto and Cuba are both in the Eastern Time Zone so there would only be a conflict in the Summer.

I re-read myself and knew something was wrong. I should have written they keep DST during the winter time so therefore, they're an hour ahead of us. BUT, I just checked again and it seems they are back to normal. Therefore, I can't explain the schedule up there of CU, because looking at AC for instance YYZ-HOG, it goes 15FEB2007 AC1816 15:30 19:20 22FEB2007 AC1817 20:20 00:15 (chose random dates here), which gives a block time of 3h50 minutes, bang on for that route (with no time difference). I therefore, stand corrected.

The October Skyguide shows CU #180 northbound and 181 southbound as a 320 aircraft. Flight time for the 1435 miles is six and one half hours with one stop. For many years it was Halifax.

-96 is not so underpowered and flight distance not as long/less fuel, in this case..(tho did the IL-86s do Thailand-Moscow/western Russia non-stop?)

Anyways, I should have an answer in 2-3 hrs, I'm on shift at 1530

So , is Cubana allowed to overfly US airspace on thier way here ? I remember reading a thread in here about Tu154's to YYZ . They had to fly up North of Maine and continue west by YUL.

I flew on an SU IL9 from SVO to DEL a few years ago. The carpet was coming up, there wasn't any form of IFE, the machine looked rather odd inside...but it was an interesting, enjoyable experience.
