A318 Back At LCY This Weekend

Tue Oct 24, 2006 8:19 pm

A318 will be at LCY again this weekend.

Subject to weather and Airbus planning, the flight will either be Saturday AM or Sunday PM.

Should be interesting.

I hope it's Sunday PM, that means I'll be at work, it'll probably be parked on Stand 13/14.

A318 is planned to come in Saturday AM, unless the weather is bad.

Any idea what time it will be there? Want to see if I can get there to take a few shots.

Why is she going there? More tests or a promotional visit?

Perhaps for the concluding part of their LCY trials before certification? I think the environmental (noise) tests are not completed yet. BTW, what has come out of Airbus' campaign to have the A318 ETOPS certified? If for promotional visit, Airbus should really send it in ELITE fitment!

Yes, but finding out if I can post them or not as they were taken next to the runway!  Wink

The A318, is simply fantastic - took off using a quarter of the runway!

I saw it too it was fab. I live right next to the airport well I can see the runway from my balcony. It did indeed only use a quater of the runway but i guess it was pretty empty especially by the steep incline on take off! I took pics but only from my camera phone - digi cam not charged! Will post cam shots if people would like? I personally think it was also quieter than the 146's and anlot of the private jets that use LCY. Loved it!!!

Actually, it had (I believe) around a 68 ton payload inside, simulated using water tanks. Also it had enough fuel to fly from Toulouse, do circuits at LCY, fly back to an airport in Southern France, do circuits there and land back at Toulouse!

68 ton payload fantastic. It performed better than I thought! Perhaps your view from Essex wasn't as good as mine! Thanks for the info, very kind indeed.

There is no freaking way an A318 can lift 68 tonnes of payload. Its MTOW is 68 tonnes (in the "HGW" version), but not the payload.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

Has Airbus kind of given up on selling the A318 as a pax aircraft and instead focus more on the Elite version?

Is the PW6000 as good as it was supposed to be?

Is there a huge potential at LCY or is it more hype for extra publicity?

Airbus will obviously continue to offer it as an airliner and sell to whoever wants to buy.
Don't know about the PW6000.
Certifying the A318 for LCY should attract attention from European A320 family airlines (AF, BA, LH, IB, AZ,...) and therefore increase the possibilities to sell the A318.

Yes, the new version of the PW6000 has solved the fuel burn problem.

The PW6000A is supposed to be on LAN Chile's A318 order, but those aircraft are taking forever to be delivered. Is LAN contemplating conversion to the A319 too?

The question remains, is it even practical to operate an A318 into LCY? Think especially in terms of its wingspan, which compared to all those turboprops and RJs which fly there, is huge.

F-WWIB??

Yes, if you click on the picture, you'll be able to see clearly that the current testreg is F-WWIB.

I thought LA switched the A318 order in favour of more A319s.

I was told in another thread the original F-WWIB demo aircraft was subsequently delivered to F9. I think Airbus use F-WWIB as test and certification registration until the airframe is delivered, then reuse it (and others in the sequence, i.e., F-WWIC, etc.) in case of multi-frame orders.

They are building additional ramp space at LCY. This should solve the problem to some extent. Also LCY has explicitly stated that because of the movement caps they will be trying to improve passenger numbers by attracting larger aircraft rather than more movement, a strategy that should suit A318 sales.

The A318 may be attractive for existing A32X operators such as Alitalia, Iberia, British Airways, Air France, Austrian, Swiss, SAS as they can use the A318 for peak-time flights into LCY and during the day for thin routes from their hubs. While they might nit be terribly cost-effective on those routes, the high yiels on th LCY services probably will off-set this. After all, those airlines have little choice if they do not want to go for the E175.
