New A320 Operator: Shanghai Airlines

Tue Oct 24, 2006 10:22 pm

At least I believe these would be the first A320s for Shanghai Airlines

SHANGHAI, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Chinese regional carrier Shanghai Airlines Co. Ltd. , a long-time loyal customer of Boeing , may turn to Airbus as it expands its fleet, executives of the airline said on Tuesday.

"We are seriously considering ordering some A320s, and we have good reasons to do so," Shanghai Airlines chairman Zhou Chi told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry event in Shanghai.

Industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday that the regional carrier might order five A320s and could make a public announcement at an air show in Shenzhen at the end of this month.

"Still, that is hardly a victory for Airbus as they are not new orders," a source close to the carrier said. "They are part of the 150 A320s signed up by Airbus late last year."

Like the Government saying "We will not approve any new Boeing Airplanes for your fleet until you take XX number of 150 A320 commitments"

Sounds too familiar.....

The irony to this is that Boeing has invested 65 million in a maintenance facility there. B owns 60%, Shanghai Airlines 15% and the airport the remaining 25%. A will sell them, B will maintain them. You have to chuckle.

And this is why Boeing doesn't book the orders until the Chinese carrier actually signs up for them.

What's so silly is that there is no "choice" here at all.

All 150 Boeings have been accounted for. Unless China is willing to place another 150 jet order, that's all she wrote for 737NGs in China until Boeing agrees to open up a plant and transfer intellectual property and technology to China. (I supposed there might be a "good will" order of 30 739ER or something, but that won't come right away.)

Thus if Shanghai needs more jets for internal growth, they tell the government, and the government says: "well, we have 220 A320s to choose from. Which 5 would you like?"  Wink

German media reports it is actually for 5 A321s, not A320. Seems that we will need clarification about this one.

Come on. They have no choice in the matter. They don't buy planes directly. The Chinese government buys planes. Then they are allotted. There are no more 737NG to be allotted, but there are over 200 A320s still without assignment.

It's not a free market, so please don't try and convince us they are making a free market choice here.

Which is not to say that they don't WANT the planes. Heck, they may have wanted A320s for a long time! But the government only alloted them Boeings. The airline might be saying, internally: "finally, we got the planes we wanted!"

We'll never know, really.

Can we change the title to "Shanghai Airlines: New A321 Operator"?  Wink

Shanghai Airlines becomes new Airbus customer by ordering five A321s 31 October 2006

Shanghai Airlines has signed a contract with Airbus for the purchase of five A321s at the Zhuhai Airshow, making it a new Airbus customer and positioning the airline to become the 11th A320 family operator on the Chinese Mainland.

The five A321s are part of the 150 A320 family aircraft ordered under the General Terms Agreement (GTA) signed between Airbus and China Aviation Supplies Import and Export Group Corporation (CASGC) in December 2005, when the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited France.

All I can say is about time. Their fleet has been in need of refresh for a while.
