Why Do United's Aircraft Always Look Bigger?

Tue Oct 24, 2006 11:42 pm

I was just thinking yesterday - why do all of United's aircraft - especially the 777s and 747s alway look way bigger than all of the other aircraft at an airport. Ever noticed?

I'm especially talking about the old grey livery. Was this their intention when they designed it?

Just a thought.

While the new livery isn't bad, I really liked the gray livery they started using in the early 1990s and thought they gave up on it too soon.

It's not that United's jets look bigger, it's that they aren't Eurowhite. White jets appear smaller, I believe, and it seems to me that the old red and gray NW 744's and DC10s look bigger than the new white ones. My guess is that optical illusion probably works similarly for UA, especially on their old gray livery...the new white and blue probably not as much. Just my opinion though.

Agree with the thread poster on this....some airlines' livery make their aircraft look bigger than similar aircraft of other airlines....

As an example, AI 747's always look bigger than others...but the AI 777 looks smaller.....obviously it's just an optical illusion created by the livery and lines, etc.... smile

If you put an American Airlines 777 (or an Emirates, BA etc) next to a United one, the United one will look much bigger.

I promise.

Earlier this year I was flying with my girlfriend - and she knows nothing about aircraft.

I was telling her what was what and then she said 'If they are the same type of plane, why is that United one bigger than that one(talking about an EK 777)?'

They had that livery for 13 years and it was disliked for just as long. Further, it harkens back to the Steven Wolf era, which is not a popular one with employees. The new livery is much better, though it isn't as nice as the 1970s-1980s Saul Bass livery

Aircraft that have lines along the fuselage appear longer because your eye follows the line. Similar to how you can look fatter, slimmer, taller shorter by the clothing you wear. We have all heard black is slimming and so on and so on...

I have heard in football that during the superbowl with 2 teams usually not playing in a home field, the team that wears the darker uniforms has a psychological advantage. This is due to the fact that the darker uniform makes the players appear larger. Maybe that's what you are seeing with the old United scheme.

Of the four UA liveries that have come and gone in my lifetime, that one probably is the one I remember and like the most. I just haven't become used to the new one yet. It looks nice on their 00 CRJ's coming onto SLC. I'm sure I'll see it sooner or later on an A320, 737 or 757 (occasionally SLC does get a UA 752 from SFO or ORD as a substitute a/c)

Funny, dark colors are normally slimming.

Working near ORD, I have to agree their aircraft seem bigger, not just quantity, but they do stand out more to me. I am a UA fan, so it could be that I am slightly biased.

I like the old livery, the grey looked great, but I have become quite a fan of the new colors. Maybe because wear and tear is starting to show. It looks great on all the aircraft, but particularly on the 772 and 744s.

The colors on the 744 make that plane look like it has on blue bloomers (underwear). I thought I liked the colors, and I do, on first glance. After staring for a while though, I get very sick. Someone mentioned this before on another UA thread, but the company should have placed the lines running not over the windows but below the windows, maybe at the same stop as the Wolf/Gray livery. Even with the blue lines being below the windows, I think that may be too much white on top...The 744 is most beautiful with the gray, I believe. The 772 looks great in both blue/white and gray.

From an inside source who designed the battleship gray livery, there was no intention of making the planes appear biggger. They used grey because it was Stephen Wolff's favorite color, blue because it was the inside source's favoirte. Also, these two colors were "classy" and that's what they were aiming for when they introduced this "worldwide service" livery.

I believe the use of "United Airlines", rather than just "UNITED" also gives the illusion of a larger aircraft, as the titles spread across a larger protion of the fuselage. Also, with all the white aircraft around, the grey ends up being a more "bold" colour choice, therefore, making it more noticable...

If you want to get all specific but the delta plane does look smaller. I often have trouble telling between a Delta 777 and a Delta 767, I have to look at the engine size to tell the real difference, and perhaps the angle of the tail.

I was in DEN the other day and there were two 777s in view. However, I was at the north side of the A concourse and I don't recall ever seeing 777s in person before (being from MSP and PHX), so maybe that's why they didn't feel very big to me (perhaps I was mentally comparing it to the 747, and/or underestimating the distance between the A concourse and B concourse). Now in MSP, the NW DC-10s in old colors look really big even though the fuselage is roughly the same size as the 777.

Not throughout, just the last few years when he bulked up. He was tiny when he played for the Pirates and his first few years in San Francicso.

As for the thread, the gray United livery also has a much smaller logo on the tail, possibly making the plane itself appear larger.

If it's a 767-300, the overwing exits are a dead give away that it's a 767-300. I do however have to think when I look at a 767-400 and a 777-200. Both have same number of exits in the same locations (aproximately) The undercarriage and the raked wingtips (on the 764) are always the thing I look for. The 777 is also much fatter with a 9 across cross section verus the 7 across on the 767.

It's funny, because I also thought that United (gray) planes always looked bigger too! I do think that the gray probably has more depth of color which makes it more noticable than most of the white aircrafts... which might blend it more.

Well, with the new livery the white paint makes the planes look bigger. Lighter colors make things look bigger whereas darker colors make things look smaller. I noticed this when my dad and I were at a Land Rover car dealership and there were two Land Rover SUV's parked side by side, one black and one white same model. The white one looked bigger than the black one.

I have to agree. I always thought United's planes looked bigger than other airlines, particularly the 777. When I see an AA 777 and United 777 next to each other, the United one definately looks bigger. I haven't really seen UA's new colors on the 777 in person compared to AA, but I still think UA's 777 look bigger than, say, a BA 777 even in new colors. By the way, I miss United's old paint scheme!

Me too. United's new livery just hasn't grown on me. I think it looks fair (at best) on the 737's and 757's, but anything else it's  yuck . Northwest's new livery took a little while to grow on me, but I like it now, especially on the A330. I've liked the US Airways new livery since it was unveiled. AirTran's new livery is okay, though I like the old one better. Would have been cool to see one or two on one of the 73G's. And I hope American, Delta, and Continental never change their liveries. They're awesome.  bigthumbsup
