Flying While Sick

Thu Jul 06, 2000 8:39 am

Why is it that an airplane is the worste place to be if you are sick? last week, when i was flying(landing). i encountered the worste pain ever. it feelt like some one was shoving an icepick thru my skull, just above the eye. the guy next to me said it was probley my sinus' and that i probley had a sinus infection. the pain continued for about the next 2 days. and i was forced to pay $6 for a decongestant at miami airport. is there anyway to prevent this from happening next time i fly while sick? it was very painfull. i am not a crybaby, but tears were coming from my eyes. like when you get kicked in the groin.

has anyone else had strange experiences while flying sick?

I once flew with an inner-ear infection that I didn't know I had. When the plane started to come down (flight from den to Houston) my eardrum collapsed. Extreme pain and limited vertigo for several days followed. I now fly with a bottle of nassel spray. It has saved me once. When you feel the pressure build, the nassel spay helps open the passages back up.

Please don't fly while sick... you are only going to harm yourself. It doesn't take much to permanately damage your eardrums or other sensitive organs.

The pain you feel is simply pressure changes. As you go up, the air in your sinus cavities expands and has no where to go since your all plugged up. Should you become plugged while airborne its opposite. The low pressure inside your sinus cavities will allow the high pressure outside your head to effectively put crushing force on your skull. Not pleasant.

I "had" to fly once while I had a cold. The next time that I "have" to fly and I am sick I will refuse. The cabin pressurization almost crushed my sinuses.

I think that flying while ill should be avoided due to the recycled air now being used by airlines in their passenger cabins. I personally wouldn't want to infect a good portion of my flight because of my presence, unless I absolutely had to go and really had no other choice. I can assure you though, that if I have a choice......I'll stay on the ground.

i didn't really have the choice, nor did i think i was that sick. would lack of sleep have had a little somehting to due with the problem?

also, i was on the 777. i remember someone saying that the airquality was bad or something like that. would flying on a different plane been different? the 757 i flew on next didn't cause any "more" PAIN.

also, does listening to music cause more problems? i know that if the music is too loud, then the eardrums becom swelled. could that have caused me more PAIN?

should i have informed the FA after or during the landing? should i have informed the FA's on my connecting flight?

The worst that I have had was flying when my allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis flared up, which has occurred on occasion. It has not been particularly unpleasant but the cold air-conditioned air and the pressurization make it uncomfortable and so I sneeze often. I have never flown while really feeling sick but then, that is not a wise thing to do. The changes in pressure, altitude and the plane's motion could affect your illness and make you feel worse. Furthermore, if it is an infection such as a cold, you do risk infecting other passengers. So, let good sense prevail.

Hop to it, fly for life!

Three years ago I went to live one year abroad in the UK. Due to full flights out of Buenos Aires I took the only choice to get to London. Lan Chile to Santiago, then to Madrid (with stop in Recife) then British Airways to LHR. I left home OK, but caught a terrible cold while flying Santiago-Madrid. It was awfull feeling as couldn´t stop my nouse running and had a terrible headache. It was also an endless flight. I asked for a cold remedy to the Lan Chile cabin crew but she brough an Alka Seltzer!! She was very surprised that I asked if they had any basic OTC drugs onboard. I did this because many airlines carry basic remedies in case of some passenger needs one.

Then on BA I asked again for an aspirin or anything for the cold and a great cabin crew member brought a paracetamol/cold complex with a glass of water. BA seemed very prepared for this types of cases onboard while Lan Chile not at least in my experience.

Last winter I was sick sick, I had to take anybiotics every 4hrs and I had flight from Krakow to Paris on LOT B737-500 and from Paris to Washington Dulles AirFrance 777-200. I had terible flu I was coughing and I tought that the best way for me is to die!
But when I was on those two flights (10hrs flying time + 4hrs layover in Paris CDG) I was good. I didnt cough or nothing was coming out of my nouse
I tought its gonna be worst than it was.

I recently had a bad cold before my flight to ORD from SAN and had a stuffed ear that I could not make 'pop', however hard I held my nose and tried to breathe through it. I thought it would cause major problems during my forthcoming flight but when we were climbing after taking off I finally felt my 'ear' pop and the pressure normalized. Well go figure.
