Press Release: DL Ordering 777LR

Wed Oct 25, 2006 3:59 am

Well despite many press releases in the past which have indicated DL is ordering the 777LR, some people still aren't convinced. So to them, here is the official word:

http://news.delta.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=10431

Only mentions the 2 coming in 2008, surely there will be more.

We'll probably see the change on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries web site by the middle of Nov.

There will have to be more in the coming months that will be announced. I think that all the undelivered 777s will be converted to the LRs.

Now I'm just waiting for UA, AA and DL to start ordering the 773ER and the 787!!!

I for one wouldn't be the least bit surprised (NOTICE I'm not predicting ALL of them!) if the remaining 772ER's DL has on order from Boeing aren't all converted to the "LR" model. There will be some who will continue to say the cost is too prohibitive to order any 772LR's and already have their jaws dropping. As for the 773ER, I highly doubt we'll see any of the U.S. carriers needing this large of an aircraft unlike many of the Middle-Eastern, Asian carriers and AC with their respective route structures. If UA and NW needed more for their Asian routes than perhaps they could be likely customers since this is a better deal for them than the 744 or forthcoming 748. Both DL and CO focus more an a smaller "Niche" specialty for their overseas flights.

I wonder what routes these will be used for? I would like to see ATL-JNB nonstop before routes mentioned like ATL-SYD. I think ATL-JNB has the most potential of any possible routes mentioned. Others I think that would be good are ATL-HKG, and ATL-DEL (which could be done on 777ER).

I still believe DL is getting them for the same price as their 772ERs (adjusted for deferral). I think Boeing would be wise to do this, as it supports the 772LR and 777F programs into the future, and would create a shitload of goodwill with DL when it comes to replacing all those 737s, MD80s, 757s and 767s...

MD80s

Especially the MD-88s and MD-90s since they will likely be the next narrow-bodied aircraft DL will need to start replacing in the next few years.

Specially when they come outa bankruptcy and have 3-4 profitable quarters and want to place an order at the end of 2008 or early 2009.

Place an order for 787-3 and 787-8's for fleet replacement and expansion.

2 for now, likely a total of 5 soon, with the potential for more on the horizon.

ATL-JNB (pending on economics of current DKR stop), or a route that DL is currently not flying, likely heading west from ATL.

DL isn't getting the same price on B777-200LR for the price of 200ER. I just talked to one of the Boeing representative who came onsite at my job location.

If they get rights for ATL-PEK, I'd expect the LR's to go on JFK-BOM to free up 772ER's for China.

If they don't get the PEK authority, they still might go on JFK-BOM, or I'd expect them to start one of ATL - BOM/JNB/HKG.

 checkmark  Definately.

The MD-80's will need replacing because they're not fuel efficient but they're fast jets. The 757's will eventually need replacing because they're getting towards the older side but I would hate to see the 757's and MD-80's gone. You could say they are on my "respected aircraft list."

How is an MD80 a 'fast jet?'

Probably less than what some other carriers have been able to get them for (including AC) since Boeing wants one of the larger U.S. legacies to be a launch carrier for the home country, but agreed they aren't quite as inexpensive as if they just went with 772ERs.

I was wondering this too, mainly because of the engine difference. Does anyone think that will happen, or will they just keep 'em and operate two different engine types (like BA, etc.)?

They have an existing production and delivery contract with Boeing since 1999 when they first ordered the 777 to start replacing the MD-11s. They can't pursue a NEW contract for any 787s while still under Chapter 11, but they can modify and renegotiate (under court supervision) an existing contract, which is obviously what they're doing.

Well, DL already has two different engine types on their 763's, so it wouldn't be anything new to them.

I believe they in fact can pursure new orders, however they would need court approval.

Hmm, then how is it Northwest just announced the purchase of both CRJ700s and EMB175s?

You can make new orders in BK. You have to get the judge's approval and he will seek guidance from the creditors committee, but it can be done.

True, but the 763 fleet is substantially larger, so that makes it more efficient to have two types of engines. But with such a small set of 777s to begin with, wouldn't the cost of operating be a lot less if they got rid of the small subset of ERs (eventually, when they would presumably have a lot more LRs)? I am sure there will be no problems for delta to do that if they so choose.

Most likely as this would be with benefit to both parties. Delta gets better airplane, Boeing gets launch US customer for the LR.

As I posted earlier Comair had a net $7-8 million credit from GE which can be transferred to DL. DL has robably already paid for its first GE90 on its first LR.
