DL To End BDL-LAS

Wed Oct 25, 2006 12:58 pm

DL will be ending BDL-LAS service on November 29. I thought this flight was doing well? Is it just seasonal?

DL has really pulled back at BDL in the last year, ending service to SLC, LAS and RSW, and reducing service to almost every other destinational. The LAX flight was pulled down from song's 5x weekly 752 in May to a daily 738 over the summer, to 4x weekly on a 738. I hope that route lasts a little while longer...

No, It was year round. WN probably kicked their butts on the route. It sadly doesnt suprise me. But the route really diddnt get much publicity up here in W.Mass.

There seems to be a pullback by the legacies from these LAS routes recently. NW this weekend is ending flights to LAS from Madison, Grand Rapids, Des Moines, and Fargo. The legacy carriers are probably finding better uses of the equipment elsewhere, instead leaving the lower yield routes to the LCCs.

Seems very familar to what happened in MCO not too long ago. Legacies realizing that instead of fighting the LCC's for low yield markets, go after more lucratrive markets where travelers will pay more.

One man's trash is another's treasure. Maybe we (US) will see enough of a rise in bdl traffic to think about another flight. . .

It's not like you (US) aren't competing on a few hundred routes with WN as is  Wink .

Hello, they are in CH11, they have reduced service at all domestic stations including CVG/ except the other hubs.

AA is further scaling back it's BDL-ORD service from 6X ER4's to 5X ERD's effective 12/15/06.

It seems both AA and DL have hit New England markets (except BOS) fairly hard this year...

At least WN still provides nonstop service to LAS, so the route itself will not go away.

As for LAX, the DL build up at LAX will probably help it in the long term

I always thought that this service was odd. Yes, DL has a loyal following in CT, but come on? This is a point-to-point leisure route.

SLC was started and stopped pretty quickly. Since there are very few places in the DL system you cannot get via ATL, SLC was probably gratuitous.

The biggest decreases have been in seats, as DL no longer flies a couple 767s in every day.

BDL-LAX doesn't seem like there would be a rreason to stop it since the flights aredoing well, at least htat is what it seems when I look at seats available. I've booked a RT for Thanksgiving time and so I know it will still be operating then.

This actually was one of my favorite flights that I have ever been on, when it was still operated by song.

Sadly the idiots at Delta decided to end Song and therefore end the 757's on this route. I think Delta was stupid to cancel Song and I did not previously know that Song had operated this route until this thread and I feel that it reinforces why Delta should've kept Song.

How does it reinforce your point that DL should have kept song? DL is still operating the route, and it looks like they don't have any intention of stopping it.

song didn't have a first class, which was, IMO, a real problem, especially on their transcon routes.

It reinforces my point becuase the flights have high load factors now and it seems that a larger aircraft would definitely lead to an increase in pax on this route, if SOng was still on that route at say 2x daily, It seems it would definitely be able to sell well. I believe that Song provided much better service transcon than Delta mainline does espcially in terms of IFE.

Well, song was only on that route 5x weekly, not even close to 2x a day...

DL's new mid-long range domestic mainline product will be an improvement on song. This was announced way back when they first announced the folding of song, and has already been implimented.

I really enjoyed the nonstop BDL-LAX flight on song, even though i took it just once....maybe the reason i enjoyed it was i had a whole row outbound on a Fri. night, and a middle seat open on the Sun. night redeye. That said, maybe a 738 was a better choice for the route.

I won't take this flight again until they install the PTV's to the 738's.

Yes, on $79 fares that would make both flights bleed money, brilliant plan  Yeah sure .

Um, have you actually followed news about Delta in recent months? Delta is introducing the Song features on all transcons, in case you haven't noticed.

According to Faremeasure.com:
On average, 342 passengers travel the 2,527 miles between Hartford, CT/Springfield, MA and Los Angeles, CA each day.

Since DL is never going to get 100% of the market, having a 1x daily nonstop will capture those people who are time sensitive and plan around the nonstop. Any more than that, and DL would be flying empty seats around.

The 738 seems to be the perfect plane for this route. It handles about 50% of the daily O&D capacity, and puts DL in a premium position in Hartford because if you're a Hartford-based business person and you're flying between BDL and LAX a lot, you are going to choose DL over most other carriers for the nonstop.

Everyone else can connect in one of the many hubs that are on the way from BDL to LAX like they have for years (with the exception of when AA also ran a 738 on this route).

Pulling BDL/SLC quickly was a surprise! People from here in Vermont that ski in Utah thought the service was great, and when I traveled BDL/SLC/BDL in late February/early March the 738 was about 70-80% full both ways. Outbound many people were connecting to the mid-day DL service to HNL.

Maybe they can reinstate the BDL-SLC service with this aircraft. Just some wishful thinking.

I think that is the issue with SLC service. It was probably just duplicating a lot of connecting opportunities that could be handled via CVG, ATL or LAX. The only real reason for BDL-SLC service is either O&D to SLC or mountain-west connections that cannot be made in another hub. There probably is not enough traffic in those two areas to warrant a 738, which is really the smallest plane DL has that can fly this route.
