LAN Argentina To Fly GRU-EZE 2x Daily

Thu Oct 26, 2006 1:02 pm

Lan Argentina announced today in Rio during ABAV (Brazilian Travel Agents Fair) that they will begin their operations in Brazil.

First they will fly 2x daily from Buenos Aires to Sao Paulo and in the near future (no date given) they will run 2x daily Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro.

With this flight (Sao Paulo), Lan will be able to connect the three biggest Deep South American markets: Chile, Brazil and Argentina among them. Plane probably will be Boeing 767-300, flights are not updated in the system but i get the info that they will depart from GRU at 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM.

Further info on Lan Argentina developments at this thread: Status Of Lan Agentina, What New Routes Are Plnd? (by Avianca Oct 23 2006 in Civil Aviation)

Oi Lipe!

Do you know the effective dates for EZE-GRU-EZE flights?

Any clue whether they will code-share with BA on this route? BA flies to GRU daily, but offer onwards connections to EZE only a few times a week. With the new LAN flight they could stop serving EZE and leave it up to 4M. This would increase the frequency to 7 weekly and right now it ain't non-stop anyway.

Edit: spelling

Could be, but they can settle an interline agreement, to provide connections without adding a BA code on the flight. The ETA GRU-EZE on the morning will also allow such connections (7 AM).

Tks for the info, Lipe.

It makes sense for LANArgentina to start Brazil flight. AR's biggest market is Brazil, followed by the US, Chile, Venezuela and Mexico.

Have you received the O GLOBO edition ?

Indeed, Lan Argentina has also plans to fly to Rio very soon. And LAN is really looking to start Lan Brasil !

Could they go somewhere else during this time? GIG is certainly doable (what is it, like 300 km?), but there's plenty of competion there...

Really, that much? it sounds nothing like LAN's ideas of running the business. Any chance LV aircraft could be used for LP flights? maybe they could start GRU-LIM.

Anyway, I think I saw an 4M's LV registred 767 in SCL a month ago, so they do keep using the a/c during idle hours of the MIA-EZE ops.

Lovely indeed, but not certain. Any chance considering RG's current situation?

LP already flies 6x weekly GRU-LIM with 763 with a possible extension LIM-LAX and another 763 stays at GRU during the day for this flight.

Yes, and AR / RG / JJ flies non-stop EZE-GIG. A leg GIG-GRU could not attract so much customers.

Arcano, i know there are Brazilian LAN employees in training at Chile HQ to know more about Lan rules, strategy and how to prepare the airline. They should use ABSA (owned by Lan Chile) Cargo Airline Certification. Even considering Varig situation, Brazil has an amazing market (remember that today Gol ordered more 20 738) and without Brazil, Lan network in South America will never be complete IMO.

No, that'd require 8th freedom rights if they want it to be profitable - no country would EVER grant them to an foreign airline. GRU is fine for now, yields are better than GIG. Having the aircraft flying for another LAN susbdiary would require extra argentine pilots and cabin crew.

That sounds like LAN abiding the law of another country, which I'm glad they are doing.

Yes, but see above.

Yes, they keep on flying to SCL on idle hours. BTW, there's two and a third coming our way.

Cheers! wave

Yeah, I know that, but the LAN Group has been historically averse to long periods of ground time if there's any way to avoid it. Look at the 763 turns to places like PMC or IQQ, or some of the scheduling of LA a/c at MIA. But the only international destinations that are really close enough to do a r/t in 7 hours are ASU, LPB, and VVI, and none of those seems so likely. Conceivably, they could do an SCL turn if they could secure 5th freedom rights (remember this is an Argentine carrier even though it's de facto owned by a Chilean company), but with LA's existing service on the route, I'm not sure how much sense that would make.
