Random Questions On Star Alliance Carriers

Thu Oct 26, 2006 6:29 pm

Hi guys,
I have a few questions on star alliance carriers that in all honestly dont really warrant their own threads..
So Ive lumped them all together in the hope that some people can enlighten me..

1 - Do NZ / AC / UA have flat beds on their 767's ? and if not are they going to be introduced ?
The reason I ask is that I am to take the AC flight to SCL and I also have the option of flying UA from IAD and both apparantly use 767's

2 - Are flatbeds installed on TG 330's and TP 343's ?

3 - Who would rank better in terms of service and comfort on Long haul out of LH / LX / OS in business class... for some reason Im thinking LX but I may be wrong ?

4 - Are RG actively still associated with Star or are there any issues to be resolved after the will they or wont they go down saga a couple of months ago ?

5 - Are any chinese/Indian/Middle eastern carriers looking to participare in the Star Alliance program any time soon considering that CZ will be joining Skyteam

6 - Are NZ's new business class seats the same as VS upper class ??

Well, these are all I have right now, Thanks for your patience!!

AC is installing Flat beds in J class on their 767-300's inside a corral. The first one was completed in September. This will eventually extend to all 767-300's in their fleet (as well as other long range aircraft) but the first long haul service with them, apparently will be YYZ-ZRH-DEL.
I believe TK is planning to join Star Alliance.

I think I read this somewhere actually .. thanks..  Smile

So is the AC long haul product going to be competitive against other long haul carriers ?

NZ don't and won't as they are slowly leaving the fleet. The final two will leave when the B787-9s are being delivered.

Apparantly SQ have said that NZs business class seats are better then their business class seats

Yes under licence. AC is getting the same

See above regarding the lie flat beds

On Tap's A310-300 and A340 fleet they have the following shell style seats. With it's A332 fleet they still do not incorporate these seats.

wow... that must have taken a lot to say that... but however NZ has a CO/VS hybrid style of Business class fused with First.. wheras SQ actually have a very respectable First Class as well as an equally impressive Raffles..
So I can see why NZ would be considered a litte more impressive..

Hi WINGS... hows it going buddy ?
Interesting that the older A310 fleet have the new seats wheras the new 330's actually havent received them yet.. any reason why ?

Well the three A332's that Tap have in it's fleet are ex Swissair. They currently still have the same Swissair seats installed. I would imagine that with future maintenance checks Tap will incorporate the changes.

Tap's A330 fleet currently have the following seats installed.

With it's five remaining A332's on order, they will naturally be introduced with the shell type seats.

UA do not have flat beds in F on their B767s. The seats are the same as they were 10 years ago.

There are two carriers in China reportedly on track to join Star Alliance. I don't remember which two, but a search should turn up that information.

The service of LX is great. Regarding the seats (long-haul) it depends if you have the new business in the A 343 or the old in the A 332. The angled lie flat seats in the 343 are good and in my opinion very comfortable. The old style in the 332 are ok but not anymore state of the art. I heard that all long-haul aircrafts of Swiss should get new business seats but I don't know if it is true and when it will happen.

Air China and Shanghai Airlines IIRC.

There have been strong rumours of AI joining Star... but probably not until the merger with IC is completed.

NZ has a better business class seat, but SQ has better service. I use to be a huge fan of NZ service in business/first class, however with staff cuts, the quality of the service has gone way down since the flight attendants seem to overworked. Also meal service is pretty bad on Air New Zealand, or at least it was when I flew Business Premier 10 months ago.

The best thing about NZ is the use of the Virgin Upper Class Suite, which is amazingly comfortable. It's a comfortable recliner, and a long comfortable bed when converted. IFE is also perfect.

I can believe that with the service... SQ service is awesome !!

Do any other airlines use the VS upper class seat or is it just NZ ??

AC has a slightly different version of the seat. It's the same manufacturer, but a slightly newer model. I'm not sure where NZ sits between the two.

This was the original plan, yet ZRH/DEL has yet to see the aircraft. It has been flying mainly between YUL & FRA.

TK isn't on the STar Alliance website or listed in any of the news stories. I seem to remember some speculation about them joining, obviously Star haven't heard any of this

http://www.hemscott.com/news/latest-news/item.do?newsId=36483600001996

Airline industry network Star Alliance is in talks with Turkish Airlines with the aim of including the carrier in the group, Star Alliance vice president Philip Saunders said.

NZ's seat is the same as VS' - to turn into a bed, the seat flips over. AC has a variation of the seat that slides down into a flat bed. I haven't tried either out yet, but I would guess that the NZ/VS seat would be better.

while I admit that Star are pretty slow at updating their website I think in this instance it is because there is nothing definite to report - they are in talks with TK - membership could come out of the talks ( most likely IMHO ) or it might end in one side walking away .

I would say that depends on the aircraft you are flying, as long the cabin is equipped with state-of the art seats. OS' new business class is supposed to be excellent, personally I'm not a fan of LH's new BC seat. In terms of service I would favor both, LX and OS.

Yes, they are still a member of the alliance.

Air China and Shanghai Airlines have been officially confirmed to join in the near future. TK, I believe, has announced that they were joining star, however there is no official confirmation from Star (guess that's happening after the CEOs have met again in December). I assume Star is looking for members in the Middle East and India but no public announcement has been made.

I don't know for sure, but they look very similar...

UA do not fly to SCL and haven't anytime recently. I doubt they ever have, but I'm not sure on the last point. There was a south american expansion about ten years ago that cost UA a small fortune.

UA did serve SCL-MIA from 1992 when it bought its Latin American routes from the collapsed Pan Am - it also served CCS, POS, EZE, GRU and GIG. Since then it has slowly withdrawn from most if not all of them. I am not sure when they dropped SCL though.

Concerning the Middle East, the name that comes up the most often for Star Alliance membership is Qatar. As for India, many a.netters think that Air India (and Indian Airlines when they merge) would be the most likely candidate, although Jet is mentioned as being close to a lot of Star airlines as well.

Hi there have been NO staff cuts in the last 8 years at least to crew numbers..With the introduction of the new seats there have been a change in where the crew operate on the plane i believe more emphasis now on business.. But unlike SQ we dont have the same crewing levels if we did im sure you would get the same amazing service as well..

Unfortunately in these times it costs money for extra staff.. On the whole most crew are great and always try their hardest to look after our guests.. Considering the amount of staff we have on board Air NZ crew do pretty well with customer service standards on the whole..
