STL Post Dispatch: Lambert Runway Underused

Thu Oct 26, 2006 10:35 pm

This was widely know-but here is an article from today's Post Dispatch

Excerpt:

Lambert Field's new runway — the one that cost $1.1 billion and displaced thousands of north St. Louis County residents — is getting little use and therefore generating fewer noise complaints than critics predicted.

Between its April 13 opening and Sept. 30, the runway handled about 5 percent of departures and landings, or about 6,600 operations, airport data show. Most of those flights are Delta, Continental, and other air carriers with gates in Concourse A.

The airport has three main runways. The busiest, closest to the terminals and longer than the other two main airstrips, handled nearly 50 percent of the 126,700 departures and arrivals.

Yes, and Ms. Crouch wins the "duh" award of the week. Guess since the Kenny Rogers conspiracy has died down any news at the P-D has been hard to come by...  sarcastic

Could this be because AA has all but abondoned the airport???
It would be everso loverly if AA would reinstate the amount of flights at STL prior to their whizbang idea of shifting all the old TWA routes and flights to ORD and DFW.....That was the biggest STUPID idea that AA could have made and it really Farked over the city of STL......
STL needs a new commited airline to the city, one that will stay and develope a viable hub.....
Doesnt look like AA is interested....
Southwest is okay but their reluctance to alighn themselves with any regional carrier or start their own they have basically cut a whole sector of the whole region off.....If JetBlue is looking to establish a midwestern presence, STL is about central as you can get....Same for Air Tran if they have the same aspirations.....

The runway was designed and built assuming TWA was going to be at the airport in the coming years and that it would be a GROWING airline. We all know how that story came out.

Runway. Not needed.
