Beware Of YCD Security Or YCD Is The Safest

Fri Oct 27, 2006 1:30 am

I just returned from a trip to the west coast and felt I should warn any other travellers unfortunate enough to travel out of Nanaimo BC airport (YCD).

I travelled from YYZ the week earlier with my family, which included a 16 month baby. I breezed through security at YYZ with baby food, milk, and juice without any hint of an issue....The return trip out of YCD was the epitome of security over zealots demonstrating their egos.

YCD handles nothing bigger than Dash 8's, but every piece of luggage is X-rayed, which I can tolerate...but what got my ire up was the fact that they would not let me take my babies juice bottles on board because they didn't constitute food. But I could travel with the kids metal fork and spoon set. I had the choice of pouring out the bottles or loosing them. They would not listen to or read the new regulations on liquids.

The security at YCD is CATSA which has promptly contracted the service out to the private company GARDA. This was an unprofessional example of airport security. Air Canada Jazz employees spoke with me after and expressed there continued dissatisfaction with the crew as they are the recepients of the initial complaints...

Moral of the story...beware of the security gods at YCD

Tony I can relate... I've flown out of YCD on several occasions with similar problems. My incidents however were before the new liquids ban etc.

When I checked in with AC I had just a carry-on and a laptop bag. Check-in was smooth and without incident. Once I proceeded to the security clearance the agents told me my bag had to be checked in etc. that it was too big, too heavy. Neither of these conditions applied as I well within the size and weight rules.
I basically told them that the restrictions are imposed by the airlines and that if Air Canada didn't have an issue they should just worry about the contents and if they contained anything prohibited. Obviously this didn't sit well with the do-gooders who were determined to show this city-slicker from Toronto they meant business! They pulled me aside for secondary screening and then determined that I was not fit to travel on the flight.
I proceeded back to the counter and told the agent... she was shocked and then went with me to the security and got me through and onto my flight to YVR enroute to YYZ.

It's a shame to hear that they're still terrorising travellers out there in YCD.

Cheers,
Kaz

I haven't flown through YCD, but I have flown through several Atlantic Canada airports and can say this: the smaller the airport, the more detailed the security check.

I do find it a bit strange that items (my Palm PDA, etc.) that barely gets looked at in YVR or YYZ gets the third degree in YYT or YHZ. I don't mind it too much, but throwing out baby food for a Dash 8 flight that lasts less then an hour is ridiculous.

The actual airborne time YVR-YCD is approximately 8 minutes.
YCD-YVR is anywhere between 10-15 minutes.

Kaz;

I had to dance a fine line not to get yanked from the flight too. I could tell if I pushed it I was going to have to swim to Vancouver.

The best one yet though was the telephone conversation I had with CATSA this afternoon...the independent contractors are free to interpret the regulations as they see fit for safety....thankfully they protected the 20 other passengers from the hazards of apple juice and the renegade nipple for those long minutes over the water.

If it makes you feel any better, it is not JUST YCD. I fly in and out of small airports in the maritime provinces such as YQM, YFC, YSJ, YYG all the time and it is JUST THE SAME. I live in Montreal, whisp through security here in NO TIME yet everytime I leave these smaller stations it is the same song and dance. I fly in and out of YSJ the most and it is ridiculous. Every last piece of hand luggage is opened and gone through and swabbed and dusted and questioned. To this day they are STILL making me take my camera out of its case, they ALWAYS have some kind of issue with my car keys and the keyless entry mechanism and they go through EVERYTHING EVERYTIME. I mean, YES, I understand it is security we are talking about. But if we can get through security so fast at some of the continents busiest airports, WHY do these small airports put you through this?? I guess they are just bored and the infrequency of flights leaves them with a lot of TIME to scrutinize.
