Afternoon Gate Holds To NYC

Fri Oct 27, 2006 7:39 am

I've been flying pretty often recently into LGA/EWR and every flight I take departing between 3pm and 7pm into either airport ends up having to hold for about 30 min on the taxiway. Now, a couple questions. Is it a coincedence that I get this on every flight in this time frame and that there are flights that are able to depart on-time or do most of the flights (short-mid haul) have these delays. My other question is why do the pilots always taxi and hold short of the runway and wait with the pax on the plane rather than at the gate? Is this so that they can depart immediately when cleared? Seems like it'd be cheaper and more comfortable to have pax wait at the boarding area until the clearance is received.

You're lucky it's only 30 minutes. My last flight to EWR, the plane was already at the gate when I arrived at the airport, but they kept us waiting in the gate area for 2 hours after departure time. And then when we finally boarded and taxied to the runway, the pilot pulled into a parking space and told us we had to wait another 30 minutes.

Consider yourself lucky.

In a perfect world, it would be, but it's by no means a perfect world. The specific reasons for the delay(s) can be so dynamic as to change literally minute-by-minute, which pretty much make predicting exactly how much time a flight should wait on the gate an impossibility. (If I could make such accurate predictions, I wouldn't be working--I'd be picking stocks and wining Lotto numbers). Additionally, the stations usually need to get the aircraft off the gate, so they can use it for other flights.

When I came into work this afternoon, there were 5 flights in the hold pad at the end of of 13R at DAL, all destined for HOU, which had been ground stopped due to thunderstorms. The stops got extended 2-3 times, pushing their departure times back each time, and there's no way they could have all occupied gates for 2-3 hours.

1) They are now getting paid since they are off the gate.
2) On-Time numbers remain high.
3) They can depart quickly if given the green light.

Passengers wonder... Its the same here in the UK with ATC slots.
I have had slots numerous times that are nearly 2 hours out

The captain may decide that he doesn't wont the punters on the plane and the slot comes forward, if your not ready you miss the slot, you then end up at the back of the Que....  banghead

Push and hold.. I'd do it every time, i remember one time we pushed with a 1h30min slot and we hadn't even got to the end of the cul De sac and the tower said that we were no 2 for T/O... i just wish i could of seen the looks on the passengers faces... they we expecting us to stop  laughing

Whats the point of being at the gate anyway? at least with some carriers you get that pre flight drink or 2 or 3 or 4 you catch my drift.

plus if you have the window seat you can look at whats going on around the field.

Not to mention airfield ops want the space for the next aircraft

This was only supposed to be a one liner...  twocents  this is why i dont post that much  laughing   laughing   laughing

Hope i have been of use
