Thoughts On A US And NK Merger?

Fri Oct 27, 2006 9:50 am

I guess there is talk around NK about US taking over. It kinda makes sense, it would give US another shot at a FLL focus city.

The real question would be why would US want NK except maybe for the planes. I can't imagine the NK would bring anything to the table that would benefit US.

Yeah...NK has the big Caribbean network that US already mostly tossed out the window. Could US make it work again without the competition from NK?

At the very least US could use the planes in a big way.

Bear in mind that Spirit's CEO (Ben Baldanza) is the same person who was the mastermind behind the US Airways FLL focus city. Hmmmm...

How are NK's facilities in FLL? Do they have a hangar and how is customs in their terminal? I know that is one of the reasons that US pulled the plug on FLL.

The addition of about 20 321s and 6 319s would go a long way to start a focus city in FLL for serving the Caribbean, Central America and Florida.

It just seems like AA is sitting on a gold mine down there in both south Florida and the Caribbean and US could give them a run for their money.

I don't know the hangar question, but I do know that Spirit's terminal (Terminal Four) is the only one that has customs.

Interesting combination. I'd think that if any airline wanted NK, it would be NW. It would eliminate some of NW's DTW competition, add some A321s to put on 757 routes(757s could be done for trans-atlantic) and give them a FLL focus city.

Those 757s could work just as well for transatlantic service from PHL or a reestablished PIT-LGW flight...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEAS somebody re start FLL-Central America (PTY please), US had amaizing loads on their PTY flight, and when they pulled the plug fares on AA and CM skyrocketed. NK should look into central america, they could make a fortune and give AA, CM and TA a run for their money.
South florida-Central America is really a goldmine that nobody has touched other than AA, CM and TA, loads are almost always above 80% and fares are ridicoulusly high. I paid almost 800 bucks for a ticket to PTY last december.

Aren't all of NK's planes leased? If so, doesn't that dispell the argument of US getting NK for its planes?

I believe that most if not all Nk's planes are leased.

Not really. Acquire the company in whole and you acquire the long-term leases for those planes, too - because you're assuming the old company's debts and obligations. Doesn't mean you have to fly those planes where they're currently being flown.

Oddly, even though the operations have been basically entirely pulled down, FLL remains listed as a "focus city" on the US Airways route map.
USAir A321 service now departing for SFO with fuel stops in CAK, COS and RNO. Enjoy your flight.

Well if that is the case then it would really benefit US since that is the main reason they pulled the plug on FLL.

How about, NK, F9, and B6?

I could NK and B6 merging, but it will not happen. NK has first class is not in B6's plan. The most likely canidate is US. HP operates IAE powered planes, so MX isnt an issue.
