CO Online Check-in Problems

Fri Oct 27, 2006 11:43 am

Anyone know what this means, on the CO website:

Unable to Complete Check-in
Your reservation requires special handling. Please check in at an airport kiosk.

You may be flagged for extra screening by the TSA.

Any reasons why? I remember this happening once before a few years ago (couldn't check in online with a similar error). Perhaps it's because I've taken the same flight three times in 3 months? Not a problem, though I do enjoy the ability to print my boarding pass and go straight to the security line (maybe next time).

In addition to potentially flagged, it may be a transient issue (i.e. if you try again it may work), you may be trying to check in too soon but less than 24 hours (i.e. somewhere between about 23 hours 58 minutes, 30 seconds and 24 hours prior to departure) or your flight may be significantly oversold.

I've seen this a few times before (as well as messages telling me that the reservation was not ticketed), but I've always been able to check in by trying again (and sometimes again)

While Lincoln's explanantion is possible, my brother actually had this on a reservation a while back.....he didn't get the SSSS, oddly enough, but he had to have a ticket agent manually check him in herself. A kiosk wouldn't do it either. Go straight to the ticket counter at the airport; don't even bother with the kiosk.

Sometimes it is simply because your record is out of sync, but most of the time it is the dreaded SSSS.

Intl flight or Domestic? Sometimes if its an intl flight such as GRU or GIG which requires a VISA for pax holding U.S. or Canadian passports the check-in will automatically block you until an agent can verify you have the VISA.

This happened to me on UA this week, I had to give them my date of birth to check in, they said it was a new TSA thing...another reason to avoid getting on planes these days, what a hassle.

Domestic flight: EWR-CLE, CLE-LGA. I've done it 7 times before. Interestingly, I already had to check in manually with CO, presumably, to give my date of birth. I wonder if there is more to this than just logistical issues.

Everyone always wants to suspect the worst, but this is likely the problem, nothing more.

You can call CO directly, right now, and they can put your reservation back into sync. Then you should be able to check in.

I had a similar problem today. I changed my ticket online, and it said: couldn't complete transaction. but, it did complete it, so it seemed.

I called CO just to make sure, and sure enough, it was out of sync. Fixed it, and everything was fine.

The last thing you want to do is wait to take care of it at the airport. Call them now.

If I remember correctly, if you've been flagged for SSSS then the OLCI system works slightly differently - it lets you check in as normal, but instead of allowing you to print your boarding pass you get a different page saying "this is not a boarding pass" or something similar. So you end up checked in, but need to print the boarding pass at the airport. I presume this is because people could easily edit out the SSSS from their home-made boarding passes, and they want to avoid this happening.

What is SSSS? I'm also unable to print anything out.

TSA code for "Do a Special Security Strip Search, please."

Ok, I'm not sure what the letters SSSS mean (if they mean anything at all), but essentially it's a large flag printed on your boarding pass to let security know that you diserve "extra" attention. It may happen randomly, the agent may flag your reservation, or there are some behaviors [last minute one-way fare paid in cash, for example] that trigger it.
