What's Up With Marathon MTH?

Sat Oct 28, 2006 3:54 am

Service was suppposed to be started by COA and DL. Is the airport still dealing with the incompetant morons at the TSA for screeners? Anyone have an update?

Question is if there is a market for this route? I think most people living in the metro-dade and broward areas would just take the very short drive there.
Turning final...

Both CO and DL were selling tickets and planned on starting service next month. However, the TSA said no we can't provide any screeners so you can't have any service. I would travel to MTH to avoid the mess at MIA and FLL. Plus the turnpike and traffic that goes with it. It would knock about 2 hours of driving off my trips to Layton. What's even crazier is the TSA worked with the airport and govt for the small community grant that was issued to re-start services.

What kind of aircraft was Delta going to fly there? CRJ from ATL or ERJ from MCO?

Continental I am assuming was just going to be a Gulfstream B-1900. I didn't know MTH had a long enough runway for a CRJ though.

Delta was planning 40 seat CRJ's to ATL and Gulfstream was planning 1900's to FLL and TPA.

Starting Nov 16 and Oct 29th respectfully.

MTH has 5000 feet of runway, 200 feet longer then Key West.

I found this letter to the TSA from the Marathon Chamber of Commerce.
http://www.floridakeysmarathon.com/TSA2.asp

As you are already aware, TSA has made a decision not to provide federalized screening at the Florida Keys Marathon Airport (MTH) due to limited resources. Should TSA’s decision stand, the Florida Keys community will lose $43.7 million in projected revenue to our local economy. However, a sound resolution to the issue has been presented, and with your support, we can realize our dream of regional air service at (MTH).

Our Congressional Delegation and Chairman Mica have made a proposal to TSA staff, and we would urge your support of this plan. The proposal calls for using of the Screening Partnership Program (SPP) instead of TSA federal screeners at both MTH and our other facility, the Key West International Airport (EYW). In so doing, we believe the screening functions of both MTH and EYW can be combined at a cost equal or lower to the current EYW expense.

etc etc

Everyone should sign the chambers email.

It may be a short drive in miles, but traffic can be a bear, especially on weekends. Also, one bad accident can shut down US 1 for hours.
