Biggest Plane In The World At RDU-now?

Sat Oct 28, 2006 6:41 am

WRAL news in the RTP area just reported that the biggest and heaviest plane in the world is in the triangle (RDU)?

What type of plane?
Why is it here?
How long will it be here?

If they're doing their homework, they mean the An-225. If they're idiots, they mean the A380-800 or even 747-400.

Oh, General Electric has a major turbine plant (both power systems and aircraft engines) at RDU. I guess that makes sense. 6 engines == An-225 Cossack.

I don't think so. I remember reading that the second one had been under construction since the late 80's or early 90's, but that construction was halted for many years. If it did get finished, don't you think that at least SOMEONE on a.net would have heard about it and started a thread?

I doubt if the world will ever see another 6 engined megalifter like the AN225.
Hopefully she remains in service for a long time as I'm a fan of her.
With the engines that are available today, 6 are not needed.

I'm highly annoyed I couldn't be there to see it. RDU is only a few hours away, but it looks like it would have been tough to get there with the way they reported the traffic trying to get it.

Very good story and pics about this aircarft and it's visit. I didn't realize that being a crew on this aircraft was like being on a water ship, in that you are often away from home for months at a time, doing your job. More amazing is that RDU (at least as to this aircraft) is spotter friendly, especially in this case.

I guess they got the idea after they used it to transport Chris Farley's remains.

Saw this tiny thing at Williams Gateway Airport near Phoenix 2 years ago, it was hauling some giant transformers for the power co. in Phoenix. To say it's big is an understatement! "WTF IS THAT" is what most people say as their jaws drop! Just the most enormous plane that will ever fly, makes the C5-A and 747 on the ramp look normal.

The headline reads: Jumbo jet rumbles in to RDU, leaving some dumbfounded.

I guess 'dumbfounded' is probably an apt description for how the media views aviation.

"Cossack" is its NATO reporting codename (all cargo aircraft have a code beginning with "C")...Mryia ALSO the Ukrainian name; not Russian....

Most of the jet's 21 crew members disembarked with their suitcases and left for a 12-hour rest at a nearby motel. They were due to take off at midnight, with Wild among them.

I think this is a 12-hr Walmart raid. Do you know how much jeans costing 20 bucks here can fetch in Russia or the Ukraine. I've heard one guy actually bought a car 'cash' to take back home!

Those apocryphal stories about jeans are about 15 years out-of-date, which is also the last time Ukraine had a "the" before it. While they are probably at Walmart buying clothes and electronics for their families, they hardly are trading some Dickies for a car...

Currently the aircraft is on the ground at SNN. It arrived at SNN at 14.06 local this afternoon after being delayed en route. Due out at 01.00 but this may change

I was once in a terminal at ORD where a 747 was parked near by and a group of people were amazed to see, as they described, the new A380 sitting right next to them. This was the day after it first flew.

Needless to say they might have heard me laugh a little at them.

Speaking of carrying things back with them.

I had a chance this year to go aboard the private 747-400 that a prince in Saudi Arabia owns, while it was in for some warranty work at Dallas Love Field.

Two of the pilots haul their Harleys with them, wherever the plane goes. They are tied down on two pallets and a fork-lift takes them in and out of the cargo holds............they also told me that when this plane first left Dallas about two years ago, the prince had purchased his son a VERY fast and customized Mustang GT. They just put it in the cargo holds as well.

Must be a rough life !!  Smile

Having this thing do a barrel roll while circling the Tower of the Americas is pretty much the only way a complete novice like me is going to get a photo accepted, so you can see why some of us might be interested.  Big grin
