Etihad JFK-AUH Connecting Flights

Sat Oct 28, 2006 9:10 am

As many of you know Etihad Airways has started their service to New York JFK with daily A340-500 service non-stop to Abu Dhabi. When going to the Etihad website to see what the connecting situation is like for passengers that are looking to fly onwards from AUH to places such as Pakistan, India, etc. the transit times in AUH are terrible!!

For example:

EY 504 departs JFK at 22:10, arriving AUH at 20:25 (+1)
if you wanted to connect onwards to Karachi, Pakistan..
EY 221 departs AUH at 02:00, arriving KHI at 05:05

Just an example, connecting in AUH for this itinerary is 6 hours more or less..
The connection for Mumbai is worse!

EY 504 arrives AUH at 22:10, if you were to connect on to BOM, the flight departs at 03:05, thats 7 hours!

Now call me crazy, but who would want to transit through AUH for this amount of time?! If they want to compete with EK on this route, they need to up their frequencies or change their flight schedules a little bit becuase I wouldnt want to transit in AUH that long, hell I wouldnt wanna transit through DXB that long!

Am I missing something? Are they planning to adjust their schedules or is this the real deal? Becuase if it is, as much as I have always wanted to fly EY as their service is supposed to be good, I cant transit through DXB that long if Im on the way to Karachi.. thats just too much.

Just saw the EY A340-500 on finals for the first time, landing 13L. Nice looking plane, and a great addition to the JFK portfolio.

checkmark ...you bring up a perfect example I can relate to...I've flown EK's (SFO)-JFK-DXB-KHI route before....after 15 hours from JFK-DXB..the last thing I wanted to do was sit @ an airport for 5 hours......

Even though I now fly SJC-ORD-LHR-DXB-KHI, its nice to know that I can schedule my trip knowing that I wont' have to sit in the airport at DXB for 5 hours...it wasn't like that 8-9 years ago.....

EK has 4 daily DXB-KHI flights...so if one misses a flight, there is another one to take....

I expect EY to straighten out their route structures so the timings are better..

Cheers..

I saw it last night at the last seconds before touch down. I was rampside with some friends at Gate 27 IAT. I had to point out the aircraft to them. Port Authority brought out the works to welcome this inaugaral flight with the escourts and water cannons. After the down load I had a quick peek inside the aircraft and I must say it is impressive. After seeing the pics here on Airliners.net and seeing it in real was awsome.

EYs flights connect very well via AUH to 2 key markets i.e. LHE and DAC which have connections under 4 hours on the outbound sector.

yes the connection for BOM is terrible but their fares maybe so attractive that pax are willing to give up some sort of inconvenience in order to get a good deal...but on the other hand i have noticed that due to the rising spare disposable income of the Indian NRI middle class community in USA and Canada, they are willing to pay upto USD100 extra for an airline that takes time ONE STOP from USA (with a transit under 5 hours in EU/Asia) to their city in India rather than have 2 stops enroute.

this i believe Sean mentioned very correctly as to why KLM changed their AMS-SFO flight timings to cater to this market segment as well as effectively compete against the future threat of nonstop INDIA-USA-INDIA flights by multiple airlines.

You are correct, although it is not the KLM AMS-SFO flight which is changing schedules. KLM and Northwest are starting a veritable early morning transatlantic departure bank, with 8am departures to Los Angeles, Boston, Newark and Detroit, to counter the soaring number of nonstops and alternative connecting flights from places like DXB, AUH, ACC and BOM. Passengers traveling between the Subcontinent, the Middle East and Africa and the US will have the option of a very smooth early morning connections at AMS, allowing for a total journey time which is supposed to be very competitive when compared to non traditional options.

Hi mate you are absolutely right on that regard--and EY is quick to capitalise on that their introductory fare on BOM-AUH-JFK is 28K pls taxes so around 950 USD return all inclusive

If AUH has pay-per-use lounge that let you take showers and sleep for a few hours, that wouldn't be so bad.

I will tell you who gonna transit through AUH! The people don't care about waiting for a long time, but care about their money  Wink In comparisation to EK they are almost 100EURO cheaper.

And please take a closer look at this schedules:

EY703 | 21:30 | AUH-BAH
EY705 | 21:30 | AUH-DOH
EY707 | 21:30 | AUH-MCT
EY715 | 21:30 | AUH-DMM
EY403 | 21:55 | AUH-BKK
EY427 | 01:25 | AUH-MNL
EY423 | 01:45 | AUH-CGK
EY201 | 01:30 | AUH-CMB

the first four examples show, that they have very good connections to middle eastern cities. the last four shows the connections to far east. so in my eye they have good connections...

EY's fleet and network is still too small for the airline to apply a through hub and spoke network model as operated by EK at its DXB hub. As EY grows, one will see connectivity being optimized and a hub and spoke model with synchronized waves of arriving and departing banks of flights being applied. For the time being, the airline has to live with less than desirable connectivity if it wants to keep its aircraft utilization rates at acceptable levels.

That's a crazy routing. How doing SFO-HKG-KHI?

Unrelated: How has EK been affected by EY's commencement of service?
