They don't already? Isn't LAS one of the biggest Southwest stations?

LAS is indeed SWA biggest station that is NOT a crew base for SWA.

MDW, BWI, PHX and DAL are all big too and are crew bases.

LAS would certainly not be a surprise for me.

I just talked to a friend that works for WN. He just heard about it on his last trip.

No more LAS hotels for WN.

Just out of curiosity what does WN put their crews in at LAS?

Not having a crew base there must amount to quite a large bill at the end of the year.

Seriously? Oh God, I'll rent out my extra bedroom to WN staff rather than have them stay there.

One of the reasons I can explain for the lack of crew base would be the cost of living in LAS is high (almost LA). It started around 2003 and its been high since then. I do know a WN pilot who lives here though.

It seems as though new neighborhoods are sprouting up like weeds in the entire valley. And not to mention the numerous condo and loft projects that have either been proposed or in various stages of construction. Even with some of the higher profile projects already canceled (Like Ivana Las Vegas, Las Ramblas, and the Hard Rock Condos), there are a number of developments being touted. I saw a segment on CNBC a few weeks back where several developers (with some amazing foresight I might add) are building new developments in Arizona not too far from Hoover Dam and for the price you would pay for a house in Las Vegas you can get twice the house. They are banking on the new bridge that bypasses Hoover Dam to make the area a new suburb for Las Vegas since the rerouting of US-93 will improve the traffic flow and make the drive to Las Vegas faster.

From what I have seen with WN, it wouldn't surprise me if they started a crew base there.

What exactly, besides crews being there (Starting/Ending their trip) is the advantage of having a crew base somewhere? What other functions does a base serve?

LOL, LOL and LOL.... They also stay in the "Las Vegas Terrible's Hotel and Casino" (staying CLOSER to the clientele), but they could stay EVEN CLOSER by just camping in the streets... LOL

New neighborhoods are popping up all the time, but the issue is that the houses are still relatively expensive compared to pre-boom prices, and to other midsize cities.

The new hi-rise condo project are irrelavant due to their price ($500,000 for a 1200 sq ft unit) they are aimed at timeshare owners and those in the market for 3rd and 4th homes and want a place to call their own in LAS.

The Arizona project is contingent on the Dam bypass bridge, and that just got delayed 6+mo. due to the cranes falling over. Likewise, the Boulder City bypass has no funding and no start date, so all that traffic has to slow down in BC. The trip will get shorter, but I'm betting on people moving to Coyote Springs before they move out to AZ.

Even we at United have a crew base in LAS. However, it is always caught up in the rumor mill about closing it. After our Hubs, LAS is one of our busiest stations (SEA, MCO, PDX come to mind). It would be difficult to find hotel rooms in LAS to support an operation. I had heard many hotel do not want crew business. Congrats to SW employees who want to be home in LAS!

I'm suprized WN didn't have a base at LAS... Any links making this official?

For now. But since the primary job market serves tourism with a small 2nd home market... I'm expecting a correction.

Besides, Vegas is flipper central. Only homes in Sacramento, San Diego, or Florida will drop more than Vegas. The tides going out and to paraphrase Buffet, we're about to find out who's been swimming naked.

One of the main reasons WN does not have a crew base at LAS is that during certain times of year, and any Friday & Sunday, it is almost impossible to nonrev/jumpseat to/from LAS. Pretty much anyone based there will need to live in the city.

Since trips start and end there, the airline doesn't have to pay for hotel rooms. WN must be paying a lot of money for all of those LAS rooms.

MCO? Are you kidding me?

Does UA even have 20 flights here?

I would put LGA on that list...

We have a base in NY. But yes LGA has more than 20 daily departures.

MCO-IAD (7x)
MCO-SFO (1x)
MCO-LAX (2x)
MCO-DEN (4x)
MCO-ORD (6x)

so that is 20 on the nose
