TAP To Order More A330s

Tue Oct 31, 2006 9:44 am

According to the following fair use excerpt TAP will seek "remedies" for the delayed A350 delivery and order additional A330s.

By Jonathan Stearns and Jeffrey T. Lewis
Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) -- TAP SGPS SA, Portugal's biggest airline, will ask Airbus SAS for ''remedies'' in compensation for the late delivery of A350 airplanes, TAP Chief Executive Officer Fernando Pinto said.

''We will have to be flying an airplane for longer now which is not as fuel efficient, so we are losing something,'' Pinto told an aviation club meeting today in Brussels. ''Of course, we intend to discuss this with Airbus.''

He said Lisbon-based TAP ''would be expecting to have a good negotiation on additional A330s that we'll have to buy because of this.''

They most likely would have liked to have not cancelled the 2 they did earlier this year!

Sounds like an excuse to me but hey - why not?

Excuse or not, TP is really in need of more aircraft. They are planning a new route to BSB and need more frequencies to SSA, GIG and GRU urgently.

Why couch it in negative terms? Might we as easily say that they do like Airbus? Should we say that Continental, for example, "don't like" Airbus? My guess is that airlines more often buy airliners for positive reasons rather than negative ones. Apart from anything, just which Boeing product could TAP buy that would give them the capability of the A330 in the same time frame?

What should they take from Boeing? Some 764? Besides, Airbus is the one to blame for the A350 delay, therefore TAP can negotiate a good compensation deal with Airbus, but not with Boeing. Considering that these are going to be intermediate aircraft, why give up fleet commonality, why buy planes that they can't sell afterwards (like 764), that are to expensive (777), or that come too late (787)?

This is excellent news PanAm_DC10. It also comes to reaffirm my belief that Tap prematurely cancelled those 2 A332's.

It sure is going to be very interesting to see what happens.

Well PM, I have some bad news for you. They have opted for GE.

That's correct LipeGIG. Africa is also in great need of extra capacity.

I personally don't see it this way. Tap Portugal actually had a great history with Boeing having operated the 707,727,737 and 747. It just happened that Airbus portfolio better suits Tap's need at this current time.

The A330 is still a very reliable , economical and versatile airplane.

Another reason that Tap won't be shifting towards Boeing in the short- medium term is the fact that Tap got a great deal with it's A330 fleet and it's future A350X.

Well I believe that Thorben was referring to the B787. If Tap was to go for the B787 then they would also have to wait until 2012 to grab the next delivery slot.

Might as well get some additional A330's to fill the gap.

Well I wouldn't say that exactly. I mean having been one of the few carriers which signed a firm order for the A350 they have some serious leverage over Airbus and the A330 is a fine machine. More A330s will augment their NB fleet quite well too.

EIS in one thing, EIS at YOUR airline if you order them now is a different thing. This is the problem with the 787, it is full booked and hence now difficult to get.
When I doubt... go running!

It was born, I think, in the dark days of the early 1980s when RR was a distant third in the race and seemed the perpetual underdog. RR sales on widebodies were few and far between while PW and GE dominated. I was irresistably drawn to the 'little fellow' gamely squaring up to his much bigger rivals.

Things have changed now, of course, but in the remaining duopoly RR is still the underdog snapping at the heels of the monolithic GE machine. It's hard not to root for David against Goliath.

Anyway, that's what my therapist tells me...  Wink

Well from information that I have obtained, Tap is in negotiations for 3-5 A330's. The number of A330's to be ordered will depend on arrival of the A350X. If Airbus manages to deliver the A350X towards 2012 the number will be for around 3 frames. In case Airbus pushes back delivery of the A350X then the number should raise to 4-5 frames.

Isnt there a HiFly A333 sitting in SYD right now for the taking? Why doesnt TP go and takeover the lease of now defunct HiFly...wouldnt even have to re-regy it.

If we're talking strictly about the A330, RR is the Goliath and GE is David.
The CF6 looks splendid on the A330 IMO, so any new orders are welcome.
Apart from the L1011s, TP widebodies have mostly been GE, except now the leased PW 332s.
So them selecting GE was not that surprising.
