Oasis Hong Kong To Germany?

Tue Oct 31, 2006 6:09 pm

Many sources indicate that the new low-cost international carrier Oasis wants to fly from Hong Kong to Germany. According to their homepage, they want to fly to Berlin and to Cologne.

Coming from Berlin, this is very interesting to me, and it makes me wonder about a lot of issues.

What kind of airplane are they going to use? A Boeing 747-400? That would lead to the next question. To which airport would they fly? We have three, TXL, THF, and SXF. THF can be ruled out, it is too small and will be closed sooner or later. A 744 could land in TXL, which has better connection flights than SXF. But the terminals are not suited for a plane of that size, anything larger and carrying more people than an A343 or a B772. The terminal in SXF is even smaller, not suited for jumbos, maybe for A300 and 767. The build-up of SXF to a larger airport will take a lot of time. Besides, how much demand for flights to HKG from Berlin is there really?

A German source tells me that Oasis is negotiating with FR, U2, and 4U. They all fly from SXF. But are they going to co-operate with a long-haul carrier?

Questions and questions, I would be pleased to see Oasis here, because we don't have many inter-continental flights. But it all seems strange to me.

Oasis are intending to fly to Cologne next. Berlin is further down the line if Cologne is a success. They have the traffic rights, but expect them to look to North America once Cologne is up and running before returning to Europe. Oakland and Vancouver are their targeted destinations.

OK, thanks for the info. 747s have flown to CGN before, but is the terminal able to handle the people, or do they get in/out with busses?

That I'm not sure about - not being familiar with the exact layout of CGN. But there's no reason why buses can't be used - I've flown to more than a few airports where I've been bussed to and from a 747.

As for future equipment, pretty much anything may happen, providing it has the range. Like everybody else they are looking at what long haul aircraft are available on the market, particularly second hand. 747s, 777s, a340s - could be any if they can get them at the right price.

I understand they were offered A340-600s by Airbus at a good price, but it was considered too much too soon for a young airline just starting.

100% sure the pax will be boarded/deboarded via gates at the Terminal ....

There are two (or one?) gates in Terminal 2 that can handle Boeing 747s, and as far as I know, they can also be handled at T1. Iran Air flies with their 747-100s and 200s once in a while to CGN, as does Royal Air Maroc. I would guess Oasis would use T2.

The runway is long enough to reach any airport within the max. range of the 747, it is 3800m long.

Second-hand A340s and 777s are really rare, 747s should be easier. However, the A380 delay forces many 744 operators to use them longer than they wanted to.

Airbus will sell those of EK at really low prices, but according to the rumors they have been bought by somebody else. (QR and VS I suppose.) Those A346 are new, they are probably too expensive to buy or lease, an older 744 might be somewhat cheaper, at least per seat.

I would guess T2, as well. T1 looks really small from the air, good for A32X or 737s, but not for 747s. Picture
