Excellent. A year or two more of good results and UA might be able to order new airplanes.  Confused
Airliners.net has many forums. It has spell check and search functions. Use them before posting!

This can't be... According to Airliners.net UAL was in Chapter 7 in March 2003!

I'm sure I read that here...

Is this with or without special items, hedging losses, hedging gains, one time expenses, fuel increases, Hurricanes, TSA restrictions, bad luck, good luck, El Nino, etc. etc. ???

It must be more complicated  Wink

If I read it correctly special items reduced profit by $60 million. Overall a really good quarter for UA.

THAT'S MY BABY!!! I'm so proud of us!!! It shows that we, the employees, are not laboring in vain. I hope this will continue through the down season, and next year, and for many more years to come. Way to go United. Way to go us (the employees)!

Note: Is this the best 3Q result so far???? I think it is!! (Someone tell me if it isn't...)

I remember boarding my first UA flight after they filed for bankruptcy, and the crew was very attentive and pleasant, they wore buttons that said " We WILL survive".

Well, you out there that are UA employees (union, management, non-contract alike) should be commended for your tenacity, will-power, and dedication. Many other carriers have folded in similar circumstances. As a MP Premier, I am very glad to see UA steadily make progress toward financial health, I appreciate their product.

Congrats to UA, keep the faith.

Well, it's about time a solid profit like this happened.

Quoting Bicoastal (Reply 1):

I would hope not. Or rather, at least, I would hope they have the sense to trim their fleet somewhat - maybe not reduce the number of a/c, but reduce fleet types. That would then, of course, make them have to buy more a/c in other current fleet types to keep their number of a/c around the current level. Maybe they could reduce their 757 fleet in favor of more A320's or some 737-800's. 6 fleet types is a bit much.

I'd say more the employees, but Tilton (or someone/some group) up there has done better than I thought 2-3 years ago they would.

Ok, this will be the last time I open my mouth (until later tonight):
I have a question. When we have aircraft damages like the huge damage to N653UA, the Star Alliance plane that had underbelly/undercarriage damage early this summer, and the a/c hose ingestion by one of our Airbii last week, and other aircraft damages, how much does that hurt UA's bottom line (i.e. how much does it affect the profits / losses in the end)? Just something that had been bothering me for a while...Thanks in advance.

Actually, they were buttons and bumper stickers that read "United WILL Stand"

I still have two bumperstickers and multiple buttons. One day I'll put them up on Ebay.

Still....I hear only the crickets chirping from all of those armchair CEO's whose only experience was playing that Airline game online.

This would be accounted for in an overall operational budget, if not some type of insurance otherwise. An airline the size of UA sees mishaps like this regularly and has some budgetary averages. I know you probably see stuff like this and shake your head, but good planning anticipates this type of risk.

Actually I'd like to see them start retrofitting the 737 and 757 fleet with blanded winglets first. Get the current fleet more fuel efficient before replacing 767s.

Sort of ... CO reported net income of $237 million, but that included a one-time gain from the sale of Copa stock. Without the gain, their net was $146 million, still quite a bit better than UA on a percentage basis. Nevertheless, UA's accomplishment is remarkable. You might wish the cash flow were better, but if operating results continue, that will improve too.

Being from ORD (and now living in the Bay Area), though I don't fly on UA, I've always felt UA was my "hometown" aiport..so I'm glad to see UA do well..

Hopefully they will continue with profits and order some planes... Smile

I hate to break it to you. Non mechanics have been doing R&D at about 70% of United stations for god knows how long. Lets not talk about of the aircraft damage from MM lift units!

Back to the subject. I guess we as United employees have been doing our job to help the company make this money.

I agree. But, can you fit B733 and B735 with winglets? I thought it just the 737NG that can be fitted.

I would love to see them upgrade the 747 interiors first. Improve what you have first, bigger bang for the buck!

Then, take deliveries of the A320 the 737 fleet can be retired and order the 787!

Aviation Partners Boeing does offer winglets for the B733... I know as a fact that WN ordered 90 shipsets of winglets for their 733 fleet. Not sure about winglets for the B735, though.

I am a little confused, not sure if I understand the special items and whole profit thing here. This article says http://today.reuters.com/news/articl...ARNS-UPDATE-2.XML&rpc=66&type=qcna

that United "which emerged from bankruptcy in February, said that excluding special items profit was $335 million, compared with $165 million a year earlier"
So is the 335 million dollars the same profit excluding special items of $237 million like Continental posted, or did Continental post a high profit, and 237 was their real profit. And to make things clear, is $190 million their profit after all things considered? thanks for the help guys...

Does United need any other new planes other than the 787. Unlike DL and AA, UA has plently of small body planes in good shape. With DL and AA the plane with the least amount of seats is the MD88 which has over 140 seats. This a lot considering these are the smallest planes.

UAL's operating income (from selling tickets and flying airplanes) was $335M.
COA's operating income (from selling tickets and flying airplanes) was $192M.

According to COA's 10-Q filing and UAL's press release.

Umm....we're not out of dodge yet, buddy. We still need to pay this debt and loans off, and this profit trend MUST continue. We all have to work hard to make sure that UA stays flying, stays on-time, minimizes damages, has great CS, has great on-board service, and so many more things which are just some of the keys to success, AND of course, to getting pax on planes, which leads to money, which leads to profits. And let's not talk about competiton. We have to distinguish ourselves from everyone. We try, the good employees do, anyway.

I love United. Took one of their 777s from SFO to HNL a year or so ago and it was a blast.

One of the things I love about United is that they have the 744. So unusual for an American Carrier. Now that the airline is making money again, I hope they order some of those fancy new 748s. Now that would be great!

Good luck UA employees! Can't wait to fly u again!

Wont be long and new plane orders will be taken I say in the next 12 mnonths deposits will be placed. 748 as well as 787. UA all the WAY.
Now just bring Ted to MKE to fly a MKE-LAS. I would trade the cookies at YX for the Channel 9 at UA.

As to the question regarding working around an o/s aircraft for a prolonged period - this was accomplished by using some very creative aircraft routing and equip. substitutions.
