DTW Offers Cell Phone Waiting Lane

Wed Nov 01, 2006 2:56 am

DTW is offering a cell phone waiting lane for drivers picking up passengers who are in contact with them with cell phones. Probably a good idea so drivers dont have to keep circling around and around.

Glad they officially made this the area. It's been like that at least for the past 6months. Plenty of cars just waiting around. However, I'm sure this area will be taken away once the North Terminal opens.

Also this is nice for the Smith Terminal, but the lack of planning by DTW for anything at the World Gateway shows!

You could sit in this "new" lot and if someone comes in on NW you could buzz over there, however the drive (once again) shows lack of planning because you have to go back to the freeway, well the BP gas station, before you can loop back to hit John Dingell Drive

Actually pretty common and a great idea.

TPA has a great one...big electronic arrivals board you can park in from of...for free. Same at DCA and many others.

Dallas Love Field has had one of these for years. It's a very smart idea, and seems to work well.

I would have to agree that there was probably some better way to connect the Smith Terminal with the McNamara and Eureka Road other than that U-turn you have to make.

How is this lack of planning? The cell phone waiting areas became popular after 9/11. The WorldGateway was nearing completion at the time the "no parking" rules went into effect.

There is a lot out by Eureka Rd that would be perfect for a cell phone waiting area.

CVG has a cell phone parking lot that serves the same purpose.

I read about that in today's Detroit Free Press.

I have been parking there for well over a year, along with lots of other people.

TUS has one too. The surface is rather shoddy, a combo of rock and asphalt in appearance and texture, but it serves the purpose.

Once the new North terminal is complete, and they finally tear down the Berry terminal, they should add a cellphone lot in the area across from the BP station/parking area for the Berry terminal, including electronic signage boards. The area directly in front of the Smith or McNamera terminal is too crowded for any significant number of arrivals.

Usually most people end up calling for their ride way to early. You always hear the call "I'm here" as soon as they allow cellphones after landing, however they forget to realize it could be another 20-30 minutes until they actually get to the curb.

Actually the best solution is to take advantage of the first hour free parking in Short Term. Drive straight to the top, get great views of all runways, and a short elevator ride to the terminal.

PHX has a large one - with arrival boards. However, I think this is about to get bulldozed to make way for the west terminal.

PHL has had a Cell-Phone Waiting Lot for about 2 years now. The only problem with it is that not many people use it or go by it. Signage directing motorists to the lot aren't that much of a help; especially since there are no signs at all along I-95.

I'd be curious if usage of the lot has increased in the last month when PennDOT relocated Route 291 onto Bartram Ave. (where the lot is located); parts of the former-Route 291 (Industrial Highway) will be taken out to accomodate the new safety-overrun area for the extended Runway 17-35.

Based on the comments I've heard from other people in my car when driving to the airport....they have no clue what a 'cell phone lot' is.

In fact most of them asked "what the heck is the cellphone lot?".

A Cell-Phone Lot is (at least in the eyes of the DOA and/or PennDOT) is basically a designated FREE parking lot where those picking somebody up at the airport can wait until their party's flight actually arrives at the airport. Upon arrival, the party would just call their ride's cell phone (hence the name) and wait to be picked up at the at terminal. This lot was created to eliminate the traffic hazards associated with parking along the street and ramps.

I will admit, the term Cell-Phone Lot is still a bit foreign to most people. Actually most of the signs only say Park & Ride with a precursor sign that reads, Cell-Phone Lot, Please Follow Park & Ride signs. Rewording the signs to read Cell-Phone Waiting Lot might be more appropriate/accurate.

Although we're short on space we're debating creating one across Airline Highway from the airport terminal.

Yes, I'm familiar with what it is. My point is that I have to explain what it is to nearly everyone that travels with me.
