A good place to start is:

http://www.freewebs.com/jetabout/templates.htm

They have some extremely well-detailed templates of the major western commercial airliners.

Also, check out the designs on that website, as well as on:

http://www.cardatabase.net/modifiedairlinerphotos/

Post some of your ideas on the modifiedairlinerphotos website.

Let your creativity loose, and have fun!

On a similar note, are they any good resources for similar templates for most regional aircraft? It seems like there are plenty for mainline metal (and ATRs curiously enough), but not many for regional.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

That is a good point, maybe ATR is easy to access with licenses for example. Please give us more!

I found one but you have to pay for. It is about £18.79. The link is: http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=ga727.

DSA you could consider to purchase aircraft cliparts from OneMileUp (you need CorelDraw):
