AF277 - 31st Dec NRT-CDG - Why So Slow?

I'm flying AF277 from NRT-CDG on the 31st December. The online timetable lists the flying time as 14h30m. AF offer four flights on that route on that day with the following schedule:

Tokyo Narita JP (NRT) - Paris Ch. de Gaulle FR (CDG)
31 December 2006

AF275 NRT 1250 CDG 1725 772 12h35m
AF271 NRT 1105 CDG 1545 773 12h40m
AF279 NRT 0935 CDG 1420 332 12h45m
AF277 NRT 2155 CDG 0425 +1 77W 14h30m

The other three flights are around 1h50m faster. My flight is a B777-300ER (77W) so why so slow?

The inbound legs are listed as follows:

Paris Ch. de Gaulle FR (CDG) - Tokyo Narita JP (NRT)
30 December 2006

AF278 CDG 2315 NRT 1900 +1 77W 11h45m
AF280 CDG 1805 NRT 1400 +1 773 11h55m
AF276 CDG 1315 NRT 0915 +1 772 12h00m
AF272 CDG 1030 NRT 0650 +1 332 12h20m

Here the inbound B777-300ER (77W) is the fastest.

All flights are listed as non-stop.

Also, as far as I know AF only have ER models so what's the difference between a 773 and a 77W?

As far as I know, the AF277 is a daily service that take a route that is more northerly than normal. This is to allow the overnight flight in question to take place, and being the only one overnight flight that heads to Europe, Air France has a monopoly, allowing customers to arrive at European destiantions from North Asia at 05:00-08:00.

I'm guessing they leave at that time because of the NRT curfew and maybe fly a little slower so that they can arrive at a remotely-halfway decent time? That is bizarre.

Correct.
AF277 is a Daily flight, and a very successful flight, operated with a B773ER.
This flight connect at NRT with the Air Calin/AF flight incoming from NOU.
The curfew at NRT for take-off is at 11:00PM (or 23:00).
The flight is schedulled at 21:55 (9:55PM) in case of a delay of the NOU flight, or a last minute technical check.
But with a take off at 9:55PM, if it would fly the normal route, at the normal speed, it would land in CDG in the middle of the night at ... 02:35AM when there is no Bus, no Metro, no Taxi, no Bank, no nothing !
So AF277 takes a further north route and slows down to arrive at a decent time in CDG.

And that is everyday, not only on Dec.31st !

This seems strange if its the reason - I thought that aircraft flew at their optimum cruising speed height etc to save fuel. Why would the plane fly a more northerly track and travel further.

Is this practice widespread?

I confirm the explanation given by FlySSC is the correct one and this flight is very appreciated by PAX (convenience of time departure from NRT, easy to sleep on, no line at CDG for passport controls, quick delivery of luggage, etc). It's full most of the time, partly due to the connection from NOU.
This flight is also the first AF passenger flight to land at CDG. Arriving earlier would not be possible for the reasons given by FlySSC. In addition of taking a different route, I suppose also that they are flying the bird at a lower speed to increase the flight time
