Mesaba RJ85 Replacement...

Im curious to know how Mesaba will fill in all those big gaps that will be left out by the RJ85 phase-out. I don't think the Saab's can pick up all that slack because it seems that the RJ85's had i sizeable operation going. Does this indicate that the CRJ900's are going to be some sort of replacement to the RJ85's?

While that's not been announced, there must be SOME reason the CRJ is still on their certificate... Compass is getting the 175s. No announcement has been made regarding the CR9s/705s.
I can't decide whether I miss the tulip or the bowling shoe more

Perhaps its the fact that as recently as two days ago, they still flew the CRJ! Perhaps they still do, but I couldn't find any on flight aware but I didn't look very hard. Either way, the CRJ wouldn't be removed from the certificate in just two days.

That's exactly the point. They're flying the single CRJ to keep the type on the certificate, but flying a single CRJ makes no economic sense. There must be another reason...

Perhaps they are using it to familiarize and train pilots and cabin crews on the CRJ so they will be ready for the CRJ900 when they start arriving...?

Mesaba was originally supposed to receive 15 CRJ-200's. 2 were delivered before the order was cancelled when NW entered Ch. 11 in Oct. 2005. Mesaba continued to operate the 2 CRJ's until recently when 1 of the CRJ's went over to the Compass certificate to keep it active from Independence Air. Mesaba continues to operate 1 CRJ, to keep the CRJ active on their certificate in the hope that they are awarded additional flying (the CR9's)

In the short term, there is no direct replacement for the Avro's which will be fully retired in December. CRJ's and DC-9's will backfill the lost Avro capacity. An example of this: the evening DTW-OMA flight used to be an ARJ, and now is has been upgraded to a DC-9-30. The EMB-175's and CRJ-900's will take the place for the Avro's when they begin deliveries in mid-2007.
