AF To MEM? (article)

Wed Nov 01, 2006 5:45 pm

from the article : "Air France, one of the premier carriers in Europe, is in Memphis this week, quietly assessing the market potential for a nonstop flight to Paris."

the article is here

I would think other US cities would come before MEM for new non-stop flights to CDG, especially since they are saying the KL flight MEM-AMS is made up of 75% connecting people... these passengers could certainly connect elsewhere like ATL or DTW, reducing the interest of a MEM-CDG flight...

comments are welcome

Just to add one more element to this discussion, as things go now, Air France is not planning to return the CDG CVG flight next summer, leaving the route to Delta alone. At the same time, Air France has added its code to the daily NW-operated CDG DTW flight, adding to the A332 flight operated by AF.

I think too, although it would be nice to have this flight. Some other cities have more potential without risk to endanger other flights.

Too bad ! but may be (I hope !) this will change between now and next summer. There have been quite a few changes like this on this route by AF since they started it.

It would seem to be a long shot but given enough incentatives, it could work. Folks bawlked (sp?) at the AMS route over 11 years ago when service started at 4x a week. It's been daily for 11 years now. I do miss seeing the KLM livery in MEM but at least the city has hung onto the flight. Gotta give the airport authority kudos for vision!

Does not make much sense, siphoning traffic from another carrier (NW) to start a route of your own. Unless NW is looking at the possibility at dropping MEM-AMS for something a little more lucrative for those A330-200's.

I would guess that AF at CDG would afford more connecting opportunities than KL/NW has at AMS, right??

I doubt seriosuly if AF would start MEM-CDG. However, I do think that AF owes it to themselves, at least, the possibility of checking out, in detail, the facilities, and possibilities of MEM-CDG considering that it is a hub for NW.

I believe that KL/NW at AMS has equal the connections that AF has at CDG, or very close to it.

AF, KL and its Skyteam partners seem well entrenched on routes between CDG, AMS, and Skyteam hubs in the United States, such as JFK, EWR, ATL, DTW, CVG, and IAH. AF should consider cities that have greater traffic potential than MEM. DEN would be a good choice. Although DEN is a hub for the rival Star Alliance, AF could start CDG-DEN flights before UA. SEA and PHX are other cities in the western United States that AF may want to consider. AF could also return to DFW and challenge AA at its hub, just as it does at ORD and MIA.

I think there are lot of more lucrative and more economical destinations for AF than MEM, eg DFW, which is served by n o n e Skteam member on a n/s service from continental Europe.
and: btw, wasn 't BA serving MSY many years ago, why did BA quit serving MSY ???
Was it such a nonprofitable route? As far as I can remember they operated an L10 on this route, since they discountinued MSY no other carrier ( U.S. or European) relaunched a n/s service into a European hub. But i may be corrected, REgards, Chris
