SAW To Increase Capacity By 10 Mil.

Wed Nov 01, 2006 6:01 pm

SAW is looking into bids from 5 companies to build a new int. terminal to increase its capacity by 10 mil. In 2004 it received 245,000 pax, in 2005 over 1 mil, this year close to 2.5 mil. Beside TK and Pegasus; Germanwings, Condor, Easyjet, Myair flies there. (Turkish only)

This must be some kind of a forecasting record. After 3 years of operations it is time to build a new terminal. In any case, it will be much needed due to congestion in IST coming up soon.

The airport has been overwhelmed with activity in the last year. In addition to LCCs the facility host most CIS passenger and cargo flights so there is always an interesting variety of Russian aircraft.

The current international terminal will revert to domestic operations, while the current small domestic facility will be razed. The new international facility will be built along the lines of BOT (Build, Operate, Transfer) and the Turkish-Austrain TAV group is a favored bidder for the project.

In addition the airport is trying to attract cargo traffic over from IST, including luring over integrators such as DHL.
