US Orders 7 Sets Of Blended Winglets For 757s

Thu Nov 02, 2006 12:56 am

The order was just announced and I'm excited to see the aircraft with the new winglets. The additions will begin in January. It looks like they're going to plan many new European routes in the coming years.

They already fly to Europe with 757 just without winglets (saw one at DUB today).

While APB might have just announced it, it's been an open secret that US has been acknowledging for months. See, for example, this thread.

Note that this 7 sets of winglets just covers the 3 existing ETOPS birds and the 4 to be made ETOPS this winter. (The new ship numbers are 200-206 for those planes.)

From what I've heard all the ETOPS Europe 757s will have Winglets, the rest of the 757 fleet will go with out. Can anyone confirm/deny?

For this year, yes.

If they like what they see with the Europe ETOPS fleet, then they intend to put winglets on the Hawaii ETOPS fleet next year.

There are no plans to put winglets on the non-ETOPS 757s.

I wonder if it would be worth it to look at winglets for the 767s? Is there even anyone doing this yet? I am sure US would make their money back if the continue to run them even after the 332s are online.

Would the benefits gained from that be even worth mentioning? Don't winglets only add a few hundred miles (150-300 tops)? It would seem all of US's future expansion is beyond that in their 767's range.

The fuel savings alone would pay for the upgrades in a few years. Also flights such as PHL-ATH and if the ever wanted to start service to SVO, IST or the east coast to HNL. A boost of a few hundred miles would take care of some of the restrictions on those flights.

One suspects that if 762ER winglets were available, US would buy them.
