Austrian to cut 700-1000 jobs and get rid of A330s

Die Presse

According to the Austrian daily - Die Presse, OS is to "cut 700-1000 more jobs and its A330 fleet. Cutting back on less profitable routes such as VIE-PVG. The AUA group employs 8600 and if the plan is carried out (including the 2 A340s already on their way to LX) a total loss of every 6th work place will occur. After the cut back of the Austrailia route this further saving course is to be announced at an EGM tomorrow."

So that leaves 3 777's and 5 767's for their long haul fleet?

Why get rid of the A332s? I thought they were the right size for many AUA routes...

Do they own their A330s, or are they leased?

That is a shame, I have flown on their 330s and liked them a lot. How come they are let go, instead of the 767s?

I can only think they might not be able to fill the larger A332? Or don't need it's range and the 767 comes out ahead in CASM because of it?

I'm not yet very good in German, but were the 350 job losses due to the Australian routes retreat and the sale of the two A340s (first paragraph) or only because of the Australian routes (fifth paragraph)?

OS shares have lost nearly 75% of their value compared to what they were in 1999, who is going to help the airline for its capital increase (400 million) ?

Maybe the 767's are owned and paid for, while the A332's are leased.

Probably cheaper to operate owned aircraft and fully paid for than expensive leased A330's

Just my opinion.

Quiet shocking if you ask me. Sad to see them leave the OS fleet.

I'm wondering how long it will take until OS starts to get rid off their short and medium haul fleet, as there won't be any demand anymore for many, many routes which are currently feeding their long haul destinations ...

The three B777s are capable of serving the longer Asian routes while the B767s can operate to India and to the USA/Canada. The A332's longer range is not required any more on the shrunk network. So they can save costs by eliminating both the A330/A340s. Only one of the A332s is leased, so they will most likely get a good deal by selling the other three frames - we shouldn't forget there's a high demand for used A330s.

It will be interesting to see which narrowbody type will have to go - it makes no sense to operate both B737NG and A32X.

Die Presse says that they intend to increase the capital by up to EUR400 million, but according to OS 3Q report, they'll need EUR350 million.
Still from that report, OS intend to launch a strategic cooperation with Air Union from March next year, and they want to reorient the airlines long-haul programme by strengthening its trans-Atlantic routes.

On the other hand they will add another 3 F100's in the very near future.
So I guess the regional fleet does ok.

I may be flying OS in late January on the YYZ-VIE route. I know this route is currently operated by the A332. Is there a chance it may be switched to a 767 by that time, or will it still most likely be an A332? The article said that they will start getting rid of them this January. I still don't know what airline I will be flying, but it would be nice to know in the case that I do fly OS...

They are already operating the YYZ-VIE route with a 767-300 and will not change this until late January.

TWO: US is a fellow Star member; why wouldn't they be on the list for possible Austria A330 takers?

OS decided not to fly to Karachi....darn, besides TK, OS would be one of the only other European (actually only other European) carrier to fly to KHI...such a shame, as so many carriers such as AF, LH, KL, The old Swiss Air used to fly to KHI at one time.... Sad

At least we'll be seeing another 777 come to ORD though... bigthumbsup

I do see that these are PW4168 powered!
http://www.aua.com/at/eng/Austrian/Fleet/airbus+330/

As much as I'd like to see these go to NW, that won't happen (not while in BK, ok, maybe one or two leased to replace a DC-10 or 742).

Whom else is bidding on Pratt A332's? US airways does seem to be a logical choice. One problem with having 3 engine vendors is that the secondary market gets mucked up.  Sad

PHX-LGW
PHL-Eastern European markets
PHL-HNL, although I highly doubt this one. I wonder if Asia would be within range with the A332, especially the ones AUA uses...

I see two going to PHX for PHX-FRA and PHX-LGW.
The third would go to PHL for PHL-ATH.
The fourth would fly BWT PHX-PHL-SJU, replacing the 333 on the PHL-SJU route. This 332 would act as the spare for the system. Going PHL to SJU in the morning. Coming back to PHL in the early afternoon. It would be in PHL long enough to ensure it would not be needed and then head to PHX to back up their two European flights. Then coming back to PHL as a redeye.

The thought of that is amazing. I'm hoping this all works out, though its all conjecture at this point. Though I must ask, do you really see them using an A330 on a domestic route on a daily basis? That seems beyond major over kill for the PHL-PHX route.

There is no way a B767 can beat an A330 in CASM. On the other hand, a B767 should always beat an A330 in RASM.
