Keesje, great video! Thanks for posting!  bigthumbsup   bigthumbsup   bigthumbsup

On a side note, why is it people feel compelled to run trashy background music (especially by a trashy band like Queen) on some of these videos? I would much rather have listened undistracted to the howl of those engines on the go-around then to listen to blaring background music that is someone else's preference.

Hi Keesje. Thank you for an interesting post! Nice to see this graceful jumbo-ette in action again.

Hi RedFlyer. From an aviation enthusiast's standpoint, I share your desire to have "pure" jet-inspired audio on a clip of this type. From a musical standpoint, I think it is safe to say that - as with a great many of the arts - taste is subjective.

It must have been quite a sight.
It's 'sister' 'Lebombo' towers above the field behind the TAC at Rand. I got a few pics of it in when I was there in September. I went to propose to my fiance (who used to work at the TAC).
Big version: Width: 800 Height: 600 File size: 189kb

The picture doesn't do it justice. It's big, the tail looms above the other buildings there. I'm hoping to get a tour of it next time I'm back on that side of the world. It's a great airport, lots of big props that we would never see at SEA or BFI.

The 747 could take off again, but with min. fuel and at dawn only could it do that.

Very good video. I even added it to my favorites. Thanks Kessje.

I was there the day both landed at Rand and it was something special, everyone watching burst into applause at touchdown, there was a real party atmosphere and a feeling of appreciation for real flying skill.

There is no accounting for taste.

Does anyone know if a similar video exists for the QF 742 that is retired at Longreach Airport?

That's some serious skill they showed. My compliments to these SA pilots.

Great vid, loved the music as well, though "Show Must Go On" by Queen isn't exactly fitting given that this 747SP is never gonna fly again.

Holy mother.... those SAA pilots have a lot of balls. I was impressed with their low level tight formation flypasts with 743s and A340s but this takes the cake!

That's a great landing!!
Takes one of the highest position in my personal list of piloting skills.

My respect to SAA pilots.

The video could have been better only if ti was taken from the extended runway centerline.

A lot of SA's senior pilots are ex SAAF, and are very used to formation flying, as well as low-level operations. Most flights in the Namibian/Angolan conflict were operated at 50 ft (combat and transport ops) - I flew from Grootfontein to Ondangwa in a C160 at 100ft - woohoo !

Awesome video which matches those 747 pilot's skills. It is just another nail in the coffin of the jet 'golden age,' where planes were 'interesting' and that is coming from a guy who is just about to do a 737 rating. Don't get me wrong, our modern day creations are fantastic, reliable, economical and safe, however........... bring back the DC-10,L1011,747 Classic and Kai Tak!!!!!!

Music is of course subject to taste, but Queen ( IMHO ) are one of the best bands of all time.

I finally got it. Took a couple trys. Awsome. Don't mind "Queen", but the music was no where near as sweet as the audio from the 747 engines. I wish the person hadn't done that.

Cool video, although the music kind of gets on my nerves. I love Queen but it just doesnt fit here. I can just see the guy who edited this... sitting at his computer singing the song at the top of his lungs while watching the video.  Yeah sure

LOVE that go around sound!!!

I was standing on the roof of the terminal when she landed, there was a tricky crosswind blowing that morning. Also there was one of the crew that took the 742 into Rand, as she landed he commented "that couldn't have been fun".

The stat on the aircraft price that is shown on skypark look weird to me:

"This Boeing 747-200 (B747) joined the airline on 6 November 1971 at the cost of ZAR17 milion (Euro 1.9 million)"

I would have expected a cost at least 10 times higher, even 30 years ago.

The quote of EUR1.9 million is todays exchange rate - a) there were no euros in 1971, and back then the exchange rate was around ZAR2.00 to the GBP, so around 3 to the dollar (I think) - probably closer to reality.

JGPH1A, your rate of ZAR 3 for $1 makes a 747 in 1971 worth about $5.7 million ... I'd expect at least 10 times more.
