HK Air Firm 30 737/787; To Launch London Flight

Thu Nov 02, 2006 2:45 pm

Hong Kong's CR Airways, which soon to be renamed as Hong Kong Air, will expand its fleet in the next 3 years, according to Hong Kong's Ming Pao on thursday 02NOV06.

45% of its share is owned by Hainan Airlines, a major shareholder. Hainan Airlines ordered 20 737 and 10 787, which allows Hong Kong Air to utilize them.

It'll launch Hong Kong-London service in 2007, pending on long-haul fleet delivery (see below). The renamed carrier position itself as low-cost carrier.

The Hong Kong-based carrier will launch Dalian, Wuhan, Shanghai, Beijing between 2006/07 season, and it received approval for international flight to Daegu. London is next, pending on long-haul fleet delivery

CR Airways/Hong Kong Air previously signed LoI for 787, which arrives in 2009. As a result, the airline is looking at interim aircraft, including 777 and 330/340

738 will be delivered in 2007.

It must be lost in translation, because I can barely make out who's doing what, where the airplanes are coming from and whether they are already ordered and being transferred or are new orders still to be firmed or what.

Hong Kong Air/CR Airways last year signed LoI for 20 738 and 10 787. Seems to be a direct purchase, but it gets complicated when Hainan Airlines is in the picture.

So it looks like Hainan will do the purchase and give Hong Kong Air the planes.

Their current B738s were actually once ordered by Hainan and then transferred.

That's what I found confusing, but it sounds a bit clearer when you rephrase it.

FYI Hainan has a 49% stake in CR Airways. It also has a 49% stake in HK Express.

Laws in HK prohibit a foreign entity to own a 50% or more stake in a locally based airline.

They are also planning to second Chinese crew from mainland China to fly these new planes. I'm not sure about the legality of this in Hong Kong. We have a different standard from China in terms of work/rest, medical etc.

So is it a firm order?? They Previously had a letter of intent for 10 787s. Hainan has previosuly placed a firm order for 8. Is this an additional 10 or additional 2?? Also given the wording, should we assume that it is a firm order- can't seem to find a properly reported source- unless i'm really hopeless at finding bits of news like this!!!!

Great news for Boeing is it's true- many on this forum doubted whether CR would firm up their whole or even part of their order!!

Throw into that we have a host of 1 stoppers targeting the same Hong Kong London market, which without the connecting passengers the longhaul segments alone might not have been viable on their own - Singapore, Emirates, Qatari, KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, Swiss, Finnair

I suppose they are the first ones that will be hurt if the nonstop fares come any further down. Many of their passengers are HK students in the UK on a budget who take advantage of the cheaper fares on 1 stoppers. The pie is only so big. Sooner or later it's not gonna be big enough to go around.

You know I don't know what to make of these small carrier ordering large widebody fleets. Like Kingfisher, I read an article on them in Airways this month and they were founded in 2004 and after two years they suddenly need 5 A380's? To fly where they don't have any international flights to either Europe or Asia that would require them. They also have 5 A340-500's and some A350's on order. It seems a bit extreme for a carrier that has a small fleet of A320 series aircraft and ATR-72's at the present time and doesn't fly far beyond the borders of India.

I'm having a hard time as well... Problem is, that I think some of them are dead serious about it, and put profitability way behind having an impressive route map and a state-of-the-art widebody fleet. Sort of European flag-carriers back in the days. Their own problem? Sadly not, they'll take down others - with more sound business models - in the fall. Well, just my opinion on this issue in general - don't know HK Air enough to judge whether or not they fall in this category though.

A LITTLE extreme...????? Try flying 380s from a country where most airports have problems handling a 330... But okay, IT's A380's won't be ready for another twenty years, so..  Smile Not to turn this into a Kingfisher thread - there is a good one out there, a week old or so, on this subject - but I'm also wondering what the h*ll they're gonna do with all those planes....

The reason that Hainan is getting involved with Hong Kong based Airlines, is the exact opposite. They want to rid themselves of Government interference, which includes ordering planes. Hanian probably couldn't order these planes on the mainiland, even if they wanted too.

Woo~! Look at this livery. It's......ugly and uninteresting...Just hate those Chinese airlines make their way to commence service from Hong Kong and then call themselves Hong Kong based airlines...Please at least pick a better looked livery....
