RAK Airways To Order Either 10 A332 Or B787

Thu Nov 02, 2006 3:55 pm

A new U.A.E. operator RAK Airways intends to place an order and start operations, fair use excerpt;

By Will McSheehy

Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Airbus SAS or Boeing Co. will win an order worth about $1.6 billion to supply a passenger plane fleet to RAK Airways, the carrier that plans to start flights out of the United Arab Emirates in the first quarter of 2007.

''Our fleet will all be 787-8s or A330-200s to get the cost savings on parts and labor by using the same manufacturer,'' RAK Chief Executive Jack Romero said in an interview in the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah yesterday.

The airline will own 10 passenger planes by 2012, said Romero, 44, and has decided to buy two Boeing 757 freighters.

Surely it will be prudent for them to order the 332s, since they're going to be available much sooner than the 788s? But OTOH, the eternal question once again - does the Middle east really need the additional capacity this brings?

If they want to start flying pax in '07 - they would need the A330. Maybe they can get some from Austrian.

I believe these planes will be for future expansion. Operations are planned to start with 737s (300/400/500 series) & 757s by the end of this year. Maybe that's slipped a bit.

Sure it will be 330 as 787 will not be available before 2009.

Quoting Scbriml (Reply 3):

That is my understanding

Quoting Scbriml (Reply 3):
Operations are planned to start with 737s (300/400/500 series) & 757s by the end of this year.

They have already purchased a 733 to commence operations to Iran. In addition they are leasing a 757-200 from Iberia. I do not know where they intend to source the 757Fs from.

They have raised US$231 million and intend to set up a Finance unit to procure the model they decide to purchase and lease them back to the carrier. But interestingly they don't intend to set that up until 2009.

Of note the CEO Jack Romero founded British Mediteranean Airways Ltd in 1994, he did that via a capital raising, so he has some solid experience behind him. He also mentions that they target to have an alliance partner within 3 years, similar to what he did with BMed and BA.

However, the Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah only has a population of 250,000 so that would lead me to echo the sentiment of Nimish;

Scbriml My apologies, as you posted on RAK earlier this year and the thread did not appear when I posted and is locked. For those seeking further details I suggest a visit to the earlier thread by Scbriml However, todays news adds to that information as they have declared their intent on which models are under consideration and how they propose to structure their operation.

It is sold out until somewhere in 2011 (assuming no delays).

AFAIK, they would have to be used A330s, right? Is not A330 production spoken for until 2009?

Will RAK be a full-frill carrier like EK and EY and QR or will they have an LCC-profile? With B737 Classics only at first, lie-flat seats with PTV may not be the right "thing"... they kind of look nicer in a widebody.

From my view, i think they should buy airbus because few miles from Ras Alkhaima airport you will find DXB, where there are huge maintenace facilities for the A330 which Emirates operates 29 of them. They can easily maintain their A330, if they decided to buy them, in DXB with a good discount LoL. Or use GAMCO in Abu Dhabi Airport.

Another suggestion is to buy the EK A330's i have heard that they want to replace them by their hughe new orders

I don't know, they might get some slots. Probably a lot easier than getting 787 slots.

Maybe it's just me.. but if they are starting out using the B737 and B757F and it was stated that they wanted the fleet commonality so they could save on parts and maintenance... why wouldn't they be getting the B787?

Or was hit intent to say they were not going to SPLIT an order?

What stops them from getting some intermediate B767, and get the 787 from 2010 onwards or from leasing company? They did not state they want to own them? Operational leases are more attractive than outright ownership anyway....

I thought ILFC is looking for placements of 10+ 787? Since Air Seychelles and AeroMexico snapped 2 and 3.

The fact that A330s have better economics than 767s.

PanAm, any idea when these planes are due? I'm in Dubai for a few months and will drive up to RAK to have a look at these. Their c/s looks pretty good (shame they haven't got it on their web site yet!) - blue and silver.

Again, you have made a cardinal mistake: A330s (or anything bigger) only have better economics if you can fill them. This can be applied to any aircraft comparison of similar technology.

No - it depends on the mission the aircraft is used for.

And if you only have a couple planes, and you are going to fly 757s, you might want 767s at first just for crew commonality.

For a real comparison, they have to be filled with a capacity similar to their size. Obviously. They are not the same size, but somewhat close.

Hi Scbriml, they actually stated they have taken them but I do not know the precise details. If you can spare me a few days I shall look into it and revert back to you. Or, perhaps another, more knowledgeable member could provide an assist.
