Delta CDG-CVG From 777 To 767?

Thu Nov 02, 2006 10:57 pm

Hello, I booked my flight to CVG and just find out that it's not a 777 anymore but a 767? Why?
Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't air France also flying with their own metal on CVG?
I hope some Delta expert can help me...

If I'm not wrong all 772 are gone from the European Markets. Only 763/4s from now on.

IIRC, DL moved 777 to their new non-stop JFK-BOM run and 767 to its former slot.

Because it together with another 777 is needed for ATL-JFK-BOM. In exchange, CVG-CDG and another former 777 route will get the 763ERs previously used for ATL-CDG-BOM, which is being dropped.

AF only operates the route on a seasonal basis, which to AF means putting out a PR that they are dropping CVG, only to put out another PR 4 months later that they will return to CVG, though it looks like actually this time AF actually is gone for good from CVG.

It's been mentioned here: AF Summer 2007 - 744 To ATL, 6th JFK And Others (by HB-IWC Oct 29 2006 in Civil Aviation)
Reason's probably the reduction of feed with the flight cuts at CVG, and/or feeding more pax through ATL or JFK.

Exactly. They're constantly changing plans for CVG service. May be they're gone for true but I hope they'll change their mind and send again a nice A343 there next summer.

AF used to serve the route year-round, but since about 2 or 3 years, they serve it with their own metal only during the spring/summer season. Otherwise, they code-share year-round on the other flight operated by DL. AF has used quite different A/C on this route since they started it : B747-200, A332, A343

ATLFRA remains a 777 for the winter.

DL also doesn't need as much feed into CDG since its India flights don't go through CDG anymore.

CDG is DL's best connection point for 2nd tier (that DL doesn't already server) and 3rd tier markets within Europe as well as many African and Middle East locales.

CDG is very important to DL for connections and feed!!!!!

But yes, the MAA route is finished and the BOM is direct from JFK with origin in ATL.

CDG no doubt is still important, but not nearly as important as it used to be. Aside from the dropped India flights, DL's expansion of nonstop transatlantic flights that overfly the CDG hub also means a reduced need for feed into CDG. And it's not just Europe, but also Africa (ACC, DKR, JNB) as well as the Middle East with TLV and DXB. CDG will remain a main interest for Delta, but the more nonstop flights, the less pax Delta has to feed through CDG.

Plus, add the fact that DL and KL also this year started codesharing, which obviously means quite a few pax connect through AMS now instead of CDG (I know I will on my next US visit).

No, AF was the only EU carrier to fly there
