US Cities Served By BA In 1993

Fri Nov 03, 2006 12:02 pm

The beauty of hanging onto old crap is the fun you have taking a trip down memory lane.

From the British Airways 1993 Spring/Summer schedule: here are the cities the airline served from London to the USA. These do not include codeshared flights.

Atlanta: 1x daily, DC-10 (Gatwick)
Boston: 2x daily, 767 and 747 (Heathrow)
Chicago: 2x daily, 747 (Heathrow)
DFW: 1x daily, DC-10 (Gatwick)
Detroit: 1x daily, 747 (Heathrow)
Houston: 1x daily, 747 (Gatwick)
LAX: 2x daily, 747s (Heathrow)
Miami: 2x daily, 747s (Heathrow)
Newark: 1x daily, 747 (Heathrow)
JFK (not including Concorde): 4x daily, 3 747s and 1 DC-10 (the DC-10 went to Gatwick; others Heathrow)
Orlando: M, Tu, F, Sa, 747 (Gatwick)
Philly: 1x daily, 747 (Heathrow)
Pittsburgh: TWO TIMES daily (?!), 767 and 747. (Note, 747 service discontinued after May 1 1993.) The 767 went to Gatwick.
San Francisco: 2x daily (most weeks), 747s (Heathrow)
Seattle: 1x daily, 767 (Heathrow)
Washington DC: Concorde ran Tu, F, Sun; other flights 2x day on 747 and 767 (Heathrow)

I remember that. I saw that 744 up close and personal once at the end of the C concourse. Those were good times. If only they'd come back  cry

I believe 767 service ceased when US opened up PIT-LGW in 1999...

That PIT service was part of the US/BA partnership, which would also bring BA to CLT (subsequently), wasn't it?

Also, didn't the 747 go to LGW, or did that do some routing like PIT-PHL-LHR or PIT-BWI-LHR, thanks to the Bermuda2 law?

Are you sure two times daily? I don't think that was ever the case. The nonstop 767s to LGW were started after the one-stop 747 to LHR flights ended. Perhaps the 767 service started on May 2, 1993?

The PIT service was all BA from 1985 - 1993. Then BA operated the service with US 762s painted in BA colors for a few years with a US codeshare. After the BA/US alliance fell apart, BA put their own 763s on the route for a few more years before pulling the plug altogether. Those final years saw BA operate 742s on PIT-YUL-LHR in the winter, and 763s PIT-LGW in summer.

US then operated PIT-LGW with 762s and A333s before pulling the plug.

When did BA open CLT? For some reason, 1994 sticks in my head, but that might be wrong.

1993. That's when USAir forfeited their London authority to BA.

Never. However British Caledonian served St. Louis in the early '80's with a DC-10 from Gatwick.

Didn't the BA flight to PHL continue on to PIT at one point?

I also recall PHL flights as a youngster stopping in BOS or YUL.

Now flies three times a day. 2 X B777 and 1 X B767.
