Can You Tell Me More About The F/A Job?

Sat Nov 04, 2006 8:45 am

So, I am nearing my 21st birthday and have recived a recommendation from a F/A for B6. Unfourtnally, I don't see her as often as I'd like so I would like to ask here. It sounds like a fun job, but my main concern is family and my current gf. She doesn't like the idea of me being away from home long periods of time. Below is a piece of b6's "work here" FA decription:
"
Work Environment:

• Away from home for up to six (6) consecutive days
"

I've read you can bid on your schedules. I would really want a job like this, but my gf means a lot to me!
Thanks,
Andre

I´ll be glad to tell you my experiences. My flights were all long haul flights, meaning international. I was based at CCS, Venezuela and my routes were CCS/LHR, LHR/MIA,CCS/BOG,LHR/SJU, LGW/SLU,LGW/BDA. On all those flights I used to be away on a 10 day trip. Is true, forget about gf, family, X´mass, your Bday and so many others things, because you can be on an airplane or in a hotel room on special days. I spent so many Bdays away from home and also X´mass night and New Years eve on board. First time it hits you, then you get used to it. Besides, once you get your seniority and you can request your itinerary, you can spend more time with your gf, or when you get your travel benefits, take her along with you.
That´s all I can tell you, hope you get it. Is an experience I will never forget.

From the view of a boyfriend of a F/A I would say it's all about you, your g/f and the airline. We don't see each other very often but I don't think it's that bad at all. I don't have the standard 9-5 Job too, so very often one is at home when the other one is working. If she loves you, she'll go with you even when you are away. If she doesn't she might not love you or just is too young to face the truth about live. Well, 6 day trips are very very rare for my g/f but make it 4 days and the next 2 am I working. If the relationship is strong enough it's no problem, if not it is not worth to put her infront of the "dream job". Sounds hard, but it is. i have friends where the g/f dislike them being away just from 9 to 5 every day...too dumb for this world. My g/f loves her job even with being away very often but I think you always can request special dates even on B6.
If you become a F/A i think your g/f will enjoy having time for her own and when you come back she'll enjoy you more than she would do when you come home every day.

Hope you understood me, it's too late for me to formulate intelligence sentences....working at night can be fun but is not always.

I just finished training at Hawaiian. The trainers told us that a girl from the class before ours has already quit because her boyfriend couldn't handle her being away.

Now, HA's trips are usually only 2-3 days away from HNL....only Sydney is 'long' at 4-5 days.

Its my personal opinion that if someone can't trust you to be away for a few days at a time, its a bad sign for the future. People who get jealous easily and don't trust their significant other are not the type of person anyone should want to be involved in.

You are young and now is the best time to pursue your dreams. If she doesnt want to support you in that, think more about yourself....no regrets.

Honestly I have never worked a holiday I didn't want to or a birthday or any special family occasion. I have as much time off as I want or need and can work as much or as little as I preferr. If you want to fly 1 trip a month and go to school again or find a better career you can do that to. At American carriers the trips are not long like 10 days, unless if you work a charter. I had 14 days off last month and flew 100 hours and I have 18 days off this month and I am flying 100 hours. I honestly sometimes find myself with to much time on my hands.

I've been working as a F/A for over 3 years now and man, it is dificult to find a gf!!! In your early stages, is even convenient for you to be single. This gives you flexibility and you'll avoid misunderstandings, jealousness...etc

Just my 2 cents!

So I was told I need to relocate, I find that kind of hard to do at this stadge in my life. If I am asked to relocate, what are the possiblities of going home often and would i just be able to fly out to my base and stay at home or would that be way to complicated.

Sorry to say that. But when reading your comments I doubt you are the right person for being a F/A. You have to be very very flexible in this job and it seems that you aren't

Any comments on the job itself? Is it more than pushing trolleys and being a waiter in the sky?

The atrractive part to me has always seemed that it's a nice way to get to see places you wouldn't otherwise and get paid for it too.

At first you are their for safety reasons. Pushing trolleys is just a part of the job. It's the biggest one from outside, but it's sure more than that when it comes to an accident/incident.

Depends on the airline, at some you are home in the evening and at some you only see places you don't want to see.

Statistically speaking, it's highly unlikely that this is the woman you will end up marrying. You are only 20. As others said, worry about your career now and worry about the girlfriend later.
