Did UA Use 747 222B Or 238B On LAX-NRT 1997?

Sun Nov 05, 2006 5:35 am

During the summer of 1997, United replaced one of there two daily 747 400 flights, from LAX to NRT with an 747 200B. I thought the aircraft was a 747 222B, but I herd the 747 222B's was only for JFK-NRT. So did United's used 747 238B for these flights?

PS: For those who saw those 747 222B on the JFK-NRT route take off. How powerful and loud was there take off, because JFK-NRT is pushing a 747 200B to it's max, and they had to have to use full power.

I'm pretty sure it was the ex-Qantas -238B's which were used for the JFK-NRT flights, and the -222B (original United) were used everywhere else. The reason I say this is because the Qantas planes had the "L" shaped staircase along with the "Colliseum Class" seating in what was then Connoisseur Class.

The -222Bs were with UA until early 2000 and mostly flew EWR-NRT until that route was discontinued in 1999 or so. I think the 747-222Bs flew to other routes for a short while before they were sold to NW who had them converted to freighters.

IIRC, I took both LAX-NRT flights and the JFK-NRT in 1997. One of the LAX-NRT flights was indeed 742, and JFK-NRT was also on the 742. I frequently flew between United's US internaitonal gateways and NRT between 1995 and 2000, and I had only seen 744 between EWR and NRT.

I am not sure about which versions of 742 I was on, but I do know the JFK-NRT flight had over 30F seats and over 120 business class seats and a smaller Y cabin due to weight restriction for long JFK-NRT flight.

On the LAX-NRT ( Flight 876/875), the 742 was in regular configuration with 18F seats... that configuration was also used for SFO-NRT. UA had severak 747-100 in its fleet at the time, and they were used on many intra-Asia flights out of NRT, HNL-NRT, SFO-NRT, HNL-LAX/SFO, and also flew to CDG, LHR and destinations in Latin America from Miami.

The second flight LAX-NRT was a regular 747-238B; JFK-NRT would have been with -222Bs.

Who would have though back as recent as ten years ago, UA & NW would be entirely removed on the TYO-NYC sector?

The two 747-222Bs were ordered exactly for the NYC-NRT runs just similar to JL's & NWs HGW 742s. While the most of the 742s that used to ply this range-demanding route in the late 1980s are still flying as freighters, the NW's 742s are now sitting in MZJ.
