Who In Here Likes Denver Int'l (DEN)?

Sat Jul 08, 2000 4:02 am

I live in Denver. Personnaly I think the Denver Int'l (DEN) is one of the best airports in the world. Its my 2nd favorite of the airports I've been to. Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is my favorite. Denver Int'l is one of the most modern airports in the world and a favorite for passengers. Denver Int'l was rated the 2nd best airport in the US while Pittsburgh was rated the #1. Denver Int'l is one of the least-delayed and quickest-connecting airports anywhere. Denver Int'l is also the 10th busiest airports in the world. The old Denver Stapleton was nice but it was getting old and needed to be replaced by a new more efficient airport. it was also getting too conjested and noise polution was VERY high. Here are a few shots of the airport before it opened and no I did not take these photos.

I've never flown throught DEN (I've been through the old Stapleton), but it seems like a nice airport. However, DEN actually is not one of the least delayed airports. "DIA, which prides itself on on-time performance, sank to fourth worst among the nation's airports in May, with jsut 61.8% of its flights arriving on time." That is quoted from the Denver Post July 6th, 2000.

I flew into the new DEN in October, 1999. I really liked the architectural design of the airport. The white tent like roof gave it a very bright and open feeling. Plus, it seemed to be set up for efficiency from getting to the baggage claim, checking in, finding your rental shuttle, etc. I was amazed how easy it was to find my way around. Often when I fly into an unfamiliar airport I expect some hassle in getting around. Not at DEN.

And I loved the shuttle station at the C gates. With the stone walls and plants it didn't even look like what it was: a shuttle station at an airport. There were even some birds flying in around the plants, like an aviary. But I am am sure they got in by accident!

My thoughts on Denver;

A really striking structure, especially from the 50th floor of the tallest building in town where I was working at the time. I would equate the look to a bunch of termite hills! Approach roads are good as you might expect from such a recent construction. It's just a pity that it's such a distance from downtown. Once inside, I was amazed by the sheer size of it all. Maybe it was just me having a dizzy moment   but the signs were quite confusing. The rail system is cool although I'm not sure that I'd rate those numerous silver wall fans as 'art'

The terminals went on for ever once beyond the security checks. HUGE - luckily all the walkways were working..quite different to my normal experiences over in LHR. The gate seating afforded quite a view over the taxiways, and once we were taxiing ourselves, I really got a good impression of the airport's size.

Everything still looks so new. How well do you think DEN will age? I worry about that termite-hill roof...methinks it might need regular cleaning!

I love DIA. I have spent many, many hours in that airport. I've flown in and out of all 3 concourses and they're all a breeze. United's "B" gets a little crazy around the major holidays, but it's still manageable. I remember the first time I landed there and I said to my self "where the hell are we....Kansas??!!". However, it really isn't as far as people complain. Coming from Denver or Boulder it's only another 15 minutes past Stapleton. Anyway...great place.

Denver airport is a mistake pure and simple:
1. DIA hasn't reduced Delays. 20% of flights at DIA are delayed versus 17% at Stapleton, and to throw in another little tidbit, DIA has less flights!
2.DIA is a money-loser. DIA lost almost 90 million in 1996. The entry of WestPac was supposed bring in dough. Tell that to bankruptcy court.
3.DIA itself is a barrier. It is virtually impossible to compete with United. Just ask GPExpress, Maverick, and of course WestPac. Costs are everything folks and DIA's are too high. Do you realize that you are more likely to be delayed at DIA than Laguardia? That's an airport that opened in the 1940's.
Face it, the region is worse off with DIA.

The airport itself is pretty nice, too bad the drive and the fares suck. Ever notice all the rusted stair cases outside the terminal building, check it out next time you are there. The tent looks nice now, but what about 20 years from now. Spotting from inside the airport is terriable, who ever designed the airport doesn't like looking at airplanes from the concourses, really dissappointing. Expect to spend at $400 round trip anywhere this summer, unless you get lucky. This is the best way to find cheap fares http://www.itasoftware.com/ without this site I would not have been able to go anywhere out of DEN this summer. By the way, it may only take 15 or 20 minutes extra to get to DIA but thats only when there is no traffic on I-70. The advantage of Stapleton, especially if you live downtown, is that you can use different less crowded routes to get there.

I dont really like DEN because of the lack of room to expand, Winter Climate, and the Lack of Int'l Flights

It's In No-Man's Land!

Sat Jul 08, 2000 8:08 am

The concourses are nice, the airport is new and clean and easy to navigate and all that, but, why in the #@%& did they decide to put it waaaaaaay out in the middle of no-man's land? It is one of the very few major metropolitan areas where upon descent, you glance outside of the window and see NO buildings, NO houses, not even any trees!!! NO civilization whatsoever! Just a treeless, lifeless plain that extends for miles & miles eastward, northward and southward (westward the Rockies begin to rise, at least). It's very eerie. It's like landing on mars! Not to mention the well-known turbulent chops that are ALWAYS produced by the Rockies.

And that drive into downtown-- fuhgeddabouttit!!!

Again, why on earth would they build such an airport so far into the hinterlands!?

i think it sucks, i like the architecture but thats about it, the terminals are confusing(especially once you get there and you have to check bags and everything. and it is a mistake-look, the "million dollar" baggage system broke! and the city of denver made a deal with united that they have first rights to every gate, they could kick everybody out today if they wanted too and it would be legal, plus they have first rights to every new gate thats built. DIA has no room to expand and getting from your arriving flight to the baggage claim then to the rental car or pickup area is a pain, plus they have soo many delays! i hate DIA.

C172sb: What do you mean "spotting from inside the airport is terrible"? The concourses are completely lined with windows, as are most restaurants and shops! It doesn't get much better unless you're on the ramp. Have you been to, say, MCO, PIT, IAD, or RIC, off hand? Where at many spots you're lucky to get a couple of narrow windows? Talk about clausterphobic!

Blank 182: How confusing can 3 parallel concourses (not terminals) be? Is it the tricky alphabetic ABC lettering? No room to expand? The airfield was built on 53 square miles. Geez!

Others: How inconvenient is an extra 15 mile drive? Allow a little extra time and enjoy the time spent in your automobile. Sorry, if you don't have an enjoyable car. I do agree we need more int'l service. It'll come, I hope!

In response to DEN-HNL, it is almost impossible to see take offs and landings from inside the concourses. You can see airplanes on the ramp at just about any airport, what I like to see is the action. The only good spot is from the tower, which is awesome.

I didn't know that you considered stating facts whining. Face it DIA is a mistake and a money-loser and until you have facts stating otherwise you should just shut your mouth. You have yet to state one material fact on this forum.

Yeah, you're right - With the distance from concourses to runways, the action is pretty much nil. Airlines should give out FF miles for the taxi!

You're probably better off driving by the rental car area (Avis especially), to check out the western departures on 25. Or south of the airfield; there is a road which parallels 35L (I forget the street name off hand), by the old employee lot for northern arrivals. Also, last time I landed on 16, I noticed there is a road which is right off the end of the runway. I wonder what that could be? 120th? Good luck!

Just to inform you, MCO is really good for spotting. And DEN isnt. So dont bring up that narrow window crap at MCO.

I like the airport too. The white tent things really give it a good first impression. I have been to DIA twice, both on TWA. Once in December of 97 and October of 99. It is really modern, and the underground trains are the neatest thing.

I completely agree with SeattleOps. As a long time Denver resident, I think every penny spent on the airport was worth it. DIA is definitely a masterpiece. As for lack of room to expand, the original master plan for DIA includes space to build at least two additional concourses past C. The other three concourses can also be extended (United is planning on doing this). Mayor Pena's was definitely a visionary.

I to love the new airport, I love getting raped by United, the fares are awesome. I can't wait to visit my grandma in Houston, I get pay at least $426 r/t, and if I want to travel on the days I want to go it's $520 r/t. That silly Stapleton had low operating costs for the airlines, thats how that lame low-fare airline Frontier got started. Just think, if DIA would have opened on time, instead of 2 years late, Frontier probably would never been able to start business. This would have given United a bigger monopoly then now, whoa I could pay even higher fares, that would have been awesome.
