Who Can Replace Ajet/Helios On Luton-Cyprus Route?

Sun Nov 05, 2006 10:43 pm

Ajet (AKA - Helios Airways), have succesully operated daily scheduled services between Luton and Larnaca with some services stopping off at Paphos for over four years now. I have now read the service is due to end in January, with the airline stopping all scheduled services and focussing on charter flights. There are also rumours the airline might cease trading...

The LTN-PFO-LCA service has proved very lucrative over the years, and has been keenly priced to compete with CY and BA from other London airport while providing a full service onboard the flights. A number of smaller tour operators use to block book a number of seat on the daily flights and was very popular with the huge Cypriot community in North London.

I have read the flights were nearly always 80% booked up. At one point Helios use to operate the LTN service, alongside a daily service they operated from LHR, but this was dropped while the LTN service continued.

With this route building up a good market I was wondering if any other airline will step in and replace Ajet?

Two airlines that come to mind to me...

Monarch are familar with the leisure market and have experience operating similar length low cost flights to the Canaries and Spain. They are also based at LTN and an A320 aircraft on the route would be the perfect replacement for Ajets 738's.

Im not sure if First Choice Airways still operate scheduled services to Cyprus, but they use to from a number of UK regional airports. Maybe Luton could be another one to add as they have an A320/752 based at the airport all year round.

I think the route is too long a sector for the likes of easyJet or Ryanair, but I suppose you can never say never!

ThomsonFly could be another alternative?...

Yer I'd say it's between TOM and ZB if anyone! DP still do the service but it's more of a weekly thing than a daily thing, mind you, I can't see none of the charter-schedule companies operating a daily LCA service.

Thomsonfly is probably the more obvious carrier for the route, but you never know nowadays, someone might shock us, maybe FR? It's about the same as DUB-TFN really isn't it?

Let me update you: The airline drop dead last week. It doesnt fly anymore.
ECA is likely to take over most of its charter routes in the UK, at least this is what happened in the first days when AJY ceased operations.

As for the LTN-LCA route, I d vote for ECA. Another possible candidate would be EZY. I think that TOM or ZB would be quite hesitant in the begining.

I couldn't agree more with that! I would like to see ECA taking over this route.

I assume that since ajet retained the daily service, ECA can do it as well giving the opportunity to both the state owned Cypriot airliners to cover the whole London area with daily flights (CY to LHR and STN and ECA to LGW and LTN)
