Illyushin Il-96M

Tue Feb 23, 1999 7:15 am

The Illyushin Il-96M is the newest Russian wide-body pax jet. This version is a stretch version of the Il-96-300 is has western avionics from Honeywell and 4 PW2337 turbofans engines (same as the 757's and C-17s). What airlines have so far order the Illyushin Il-96M?

I don't know but one thing that is killing this aircraft if the marketplace is the length of time that it has taked for it to get into production. I think it has been something like ten years since they first displayed it at the paris air show. It isn't a bad airplane and was one of the first that they announce would b ebuilt to western certification.

if it looks like a 757 with winglets, I believe that Cairo Air or Air Cairo ordered two of them.

Tu-204 is not a IL96

The B757 look alike that y'all talk about is the TU-204 and not the the new IL96 !
If you want to see the TU-204, you'll have to jump to http://www.ramdata.be/new

The Illyushin Il-96M is a wide-body for those who don't know.

llyushin IL-96M...

In order to get rid of any confusion flying about "recent" Russian planes, probably the simplest way of going about it is to think of them as:

Tu-204 = Boeing-757

IL-96 = Airbus A340 or IL-86 (plus winglets)

Tu-334 = Fokker-100 or MD-80

Russian "relatives" of Western models are more likely to first appear in Aeroflot colours. So, for example, if you spot a "baby" that in some way resembles A340, but in Aeroflot colours, then it's definitely an IL-96 (Aeroflot don't fly A340s, yet) :).

Well, that was a rather "dull" explanation but handy :). Even a starting or non- aircraft spotter should be able to distinguish the models.

Good weather to you...

Il96 ordered by:

The Il-96 is ordered by:

Aeroflot for starters, and I believe TransAero and Volga Dnepr (IL-96T freighter) ordered some. I'm not sure if they are real orders or options.
We'll see... I know Aeroflot is not happy with the Il96T. The leased DC-10 they use out-performs the Il96 big time!!

Delivery Delays

This is one of the big problems with aircraft over there. It is awfuly hard to sell a plane to a customer when he knows that only the prototype is flying and that it took over 10 years on the last aircraft to go from a prototype to production.

Three more to add to the list:

Ilyushin 62 = Vickers VC-10
Tupolev 154 = Boeing 727
Tupolev 144 = Concorde
