ZRH Summer 07?

Mon Nov 06, 2006 3:53 am

First Summer 07 news:

-Air Berlin is adding 5 or 6 more holiday destinations in Spain and Greece, all
1x weekly
-Aer Lingus will fly 1x daily DUB-ZRH-DUB

I hope the US Airways flight will become a reality....

Some more news? Thanks

Is this new? I already flew twice on Aer Lingus between ZRH and DUB. Is this flight only seasonal?

No, this isn't new. EI already operates daily into ZRH from DUB.

No AerLingus has just started 5 flights a week, until the end of October they had only 3 flights a week, so 1x daily will be new...

Exactly, just increased from 3 x week to 5 flight weekly and as of start of summer timetable in March will be daily. Nice to see 2 daily flights now between DUB and ZRH with Swiss and EI. EI has a fairly long history at ZRH is I remember correctly yet dropped the route for a number of years and there was only Swissair then Crossair operating the route. I remember that the menus in one of the restaurants at ZRH on the departures level just before security had a faded image of the tarmac and ZRH and the tail of an EI 737-200 was visible... as I'm Irish, I always loved this!

Wow, I miss ZRH, has been some 6 years since I've been there now, I really have to get back soon. Trying to convince my wife to go for a week of skiing in Davos, but looks like I'm not going to win this year with her preferring to stay close to home (as we have a 10 month-old son) and go to the French alps... ahhh! If we're gonna drive to the French Alps, what's an extra 4 or so hours to Davos?
Hope you're all well in Zürich!

i was just wondering if AI operated BOM-ZRH-BOM or DEL-ZRH-DEL? I am guessing not because LX operates to BOM and AC to DEL.

Does AI do GVA then?

Why should they? The chance is about 0%. They fly to SIN and BKK. They don't have the aircrafts for this. With the two new 332 and probably up to three new 343 they will upgrade existing routes from 5 or 6 to 7 weekly (out of ZRH the second JFK, MIA, LAX, GRU/SCL and some African destinations). If they opened new routes it would rather be to China.

US hasn't published their PHL-ZRH schedules yet but I wonder how they will fit in to the already crowded gate usage for US flights at Terminal E if they choose to arrive and depart within the crowded 7:30am - 10:30am slot. I believe that E19-E35 (and maybe E42? can't remember) are gates dedicated specially for flights to/from the U.S. (both the US carriers' and LX's flights) because of the security set up. UA usually uses E19, CO uses E23, DL uses E27, AA uses E34 and E35 while LX usually takes up the remaining gates - E26 and E22.

There are actually 2 or 3 gates spare in that end of the E concourse (some of them are used for extra passport checks etc) so US should have no problem coming to ZRH.

I don't think that gates should be a problem in ZRH. If US really wants to fly to Zurich, there will be a solution.

Hi Patrick,

How are you. Long time without hearing from you, hope all is going well. I've read with great interest the threads on the ZRH meets you organised, they looked great!
I loved the old ZRH, and from what I've heard I'm sure I love the extensions done at ZRH. I really miss Zürich Klöten airport, Zürich city and Switzerland in general, a really great great place to visit.

In this week's Travel Inside there's an interview with the area manager of Air Baltic. Apparently they're planning a flight from Vilnius to Zurich for next summer. Anyone have an idea how the new RIX-ZRH is doing?

BD apparently have slots for a 2 x daily service between EDI and ZRH with an ERJ145. Given that easyJet beat BD to it on EDI-MUC, I wonder if EDI-ZRH with BD just became more likely to actually happen?

With ZRH now as a Star Alliance hub, and AI entering the Alliance, will there be the possibility of more nonstop flights between ZRH and India? Maybe this could also result beneficial for AC in terms of more codeshare opportunities, which flies to India through ZRH on a 763.

There were rumours that AC will change their YYZ-ZRH-DEL service to YYZ-DEL nonstop as soon as they'll get their hands on appropriate equipment, which might makes an AI service from DEL more likely, however this is only speculation.

As for Shanghai Airlines, It would be great to see them here at ZRH. Any Idea what equipment they will be using? AFAIK, their largest type in their current fleet is the B763. Can a B763 do PVG-ZRH nonstop?

If this is true, then AC might only be waiting for the 77Ws or 77Ls to come online. I guess a 77W should be somewhat able to do the route nonstop out of YYZ with an adequate payload while the 77L shouldn't have any problems at all.

But then again, if this does happen, why doesn't AC start a dedicated flight to ZRH from YYZ? Or would they rather codeshare with LX out of YUL?

thats what they did until they extended the route to DEL which meant two daily AC B763s in ZRH which, of course, was a very pleasent appearance  Smile
As soon as they will extend YYZ-DEL to nonstop daily they will go back to their daily YYZ-ZRH flight they operated for years.

A pity about losing our second daily AC B763 here but hey, i'll trade an AC B763 with an AI B772 or B744 anyday  Wink

I wonder about an LX return to KRK. They were having a daily CR7 Styrian Spirit flight until the demise of the later, followed by ER4 until those were gone. Maybe they could team up with LOT and have them send an LO ER4. Loads were always reasonable on ZRH-KRK.

LX and LO do not have very good relations, despite being members of the same alliance. They do not codeshare on ZRH-WAW and GVA-WAW and also do not coordinate their schedules. LX codeshares with LH to KRK and GDN via MUC. But I agree it would make sense to work something out between them so that ZRH-KRK becomes possible again.

It will be interesting to see what AC will do when they will fly again non stop from YYZ to DEL. In the past AC only offered flights during summer with 762, before introducing the daily flight with continuation to Delhi. I was on the YYZ-ZRH portion last november and I reember at least 80% staying on the plane continuing to Delhi, incases this hasn't changed AC will not operate year around and likely again with the 762 cabin not offerign a proper Business Class. Nevertheless many years ago AC operated it's flights to ZRH with 742 but things change.

Slightly off topic, but what are the plans for ZRH's Terminal B gates?

When I passed through ZRH in August, I saw a Thai Airways A340-600 parked in the closest gate to the airside, but of course, the jetbridge wasn't docked onto the aircraft.

I was very impressed with ZRH when I passed through it recently. The new airside is stunning and I found it to be a very friendly airport.

The area around B-gates you mention is used for longer stopovers of a/c using Dock E. A/c get towed to that location, in order to not clogg-up a stand at Dock E for prolonged times.
AFAIK, the interior of what used to be B-gates is already used to host events, and IIRC there are no definite plan to return that building back into use as a pax-terminal in the near to mid future.

There are really events now ( see http://www.eventdock.ch/ ).
But I heard that when Switzerland will join the Schengen agreement it is a possibility that Terminal B is used for these flights, or for the Non-Schengen flights. But I don't think that's for sure now and first Switzerland has to join Schengen definitely and the computer system SIS II ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Information_System ) has to work.

At the moment it is only planned as a winter-route. I hope they will announce that they will make it a all year route when they present their summer-schedules. With two new planes on their way i hope they can find room for it.

Word here in ZRH is:
EOS for daily to JFK -B757,
US from 01 May -B762,
QR -A332,
JL Jun-Sep -B773,
CO -B764,
JK to 2 or 3 new destinations, incl AGP.

Could become a rather busy and interesting summer.....

I hope that we will not experience a over capacity of flights to NYC. Back then when Swissair used to operate 3X daily to JFK and once to EWR including competition by DL and CO on those routes, did all flights have good load factors?

and IIRC there are no definite plan to return that building back into use as a pax-terminal in the near to mid future.

It is not yet definite. But as I know, there are serious plans to refurbish and open the B gates when Switzerland joins the Schengen treaty. Opening 2008 or probably 2009.
