Santa Barbara Airlines Fleet Plans 2007

Mon Nov 06, 2006 1:29 pm

I just read an article in the Tourism section of the Universal newspaper which featured an interview with S3's CEO.

He mentioned the following plans for the airline:

- Recent arrival of second 763ER to make MAD daily and FNC and TFN both weekly.

- A third 752ER is expected by February 2007.

- Three 733s will join the fleet on the 1Q of 2007.

- Retirement of both 727-200s.

- 6th ATR 42 just arrived to boost domestic network.

- Quito and Guayaquil are getting daily 757 service.

- Panama and Buenos Aires will start "very soon" with either 757 or 733.

From a personal point of view, let's see if they become ZED carrier one day and we can non-rev on them. That would be great.

Here in Manchester UK there is a Santa Barbara 767-300 (TFFIB of Icelandair) sitting outside my office window (with Santa Barbara titles and a nice logo with Venezuela on the tail).

Unfortunately this is not a new Manchester-Caracas service, as much as I would love to use it!

Hola Luis,

do you know something about the plans of S3 to acquire 313 equipment from Air Plus Comet?

Hey Candid, do you think you can get a picture of TF-FIB? A mobile phone pic will work! I'm dying to see the 767s in S3 colors.

RAFVC10, S3 used to wetlease A313 from APC for some weeks when their DC10s were grounded and while they were searching for the 767s. I don't think they have plans to acquire that aircraft type.

Isn't this TF-FIB the wet-lease that S3 used some months ago along with TF-FIA? Because right now the wet-lease is with TF-LLA. Also, S3 wanted to get one of LAB airlines 767s that was stored in GIG but Mexicana got it first. Does anybody know why?

With the 757, it would be far more reasonable!

That's true, but keep in mind that Copa runs a similar flight from PTY with a 73G, that even though is newer, is the same size.

They forgot to add a line on the lower fuselage, and left those engines yellow. That's why I think it looks so bad and plain..

I like the complete livery on the rest of the fleet, which is nothing special either, yet looks nice.

It's a good thing you like it, we just have diff. tastes thats all  Smile

Okay, the big question about the Caracas - Funchal route: Is there enough demand for the two carriers (TAP being the other). TAP will also be flying the route the same exact days, so the question will lie on which airline offers the most affordable fares between Vnza and the Islands.

Second question: Why is Santa Barbara still wet-leasing its 763s from Icelandair, and why can't SB get its own equipment. At first, it was said that it had something to do with the carrier not having ETOPS certification and that eventually SB would get its own equipment, but after more than a year since SB stopped flying its own DC-10s, this has yet to happen.

Incredible livery! Perhaps inside the TOP 5 for me on a 763!

The tail is gorgeous and the yellow engines are funny too but the fuselage is just plain white, that's nothing special IMHO. It would probably be too expensive to change it completely. Even the Primaris silver body lookes better with the blue tail.

Nice livery. It's not that striking but nice. CCS-EZE on a 733? It seems like pushing the limits of the aircraft but according to the airliners.net database the 733 high gross weight (HGW) version has a range of 6300 km with 140 passengers. If S3 can get there hands on these HGW 733s than CCS-EZE is do-able:

CCS-EZE: 5106 km.

Other than that a fleet of two B763ER's, two B752s, three 733s and six ATR42s sounds about right for an airline that size of S3. Good luck to S3, I sure hope to see them one day, unfortunately I don't see S3 flying to CUR as Aeropostal, Avior Airlines and Rutaca Airlines (charter flights) all fly to CUR already. Even so, S3 does fly to AUA.

And Lamedianaranja, how does a bull terrier spent her day? Haha, I just saw your profile with the dog sleeping and turning, that's a good one, priceless in my opinion!!! Big grin

I think it has to do with the Luxury tax that is applied in Venezuela when you buy something really expensive. Actually, I do remember hearing about that some years ago...

Mr. Civilav would come great into this question!

See their 757 at Miami all the time. SB has some flight at truly awful hours though. They have a Miami-CCS flight at 11:30pm arriving at 3:00AM in Caracas. Only a south american airline would offer such a schedule. I know because I been at the mercy of SB neighbor Avianca.

I believe this was a delay because the normal flights departs during the morning and arrives CCS at 14:30. During high season a second flight is added and it arrives at 23:30 in Caracas.

Thank you for inviting me in !
Frankly, I do not know the reason why SB has not got its hands on its own 767s. After all, they are all second hand.

When Venezuela adopted Value Added Tax in 1996 at long last and created a proper Inland Revenue Bureau (by the acronym of SENIAT), it stipulated too that all imports of aeroplanes, yachts, race cars and several other items too long to mention here, were subjected to a whopping surcharge of 20% on top of the going VAT rate. So, bringing in a brand new plane would cost you over 30% in taxes on the book value of the plane. This was ludicrous and led, very obviously, to the current state of the Venezuelan Civil air fleet which is one of the oldest in the whole of Latin America on a par with Bolivia.

This state of affairs was supposed to have ended with the new Civil Aviation Law that came into being in September 2005 and which eliminated the import tax surcharge. Thus, since Santa Barbara ALWAYS procures second hand equipment, reason should dictate that they have a greater chance of owning their own planes instead of leasing it. Maybe it is a question of finance and they will eventually get to it (owning their 767s as well as the 757s with which they wisely intend to replace the ageing 727s) once they sort out all the paperwork.

Remember Santa Barbara is a family-run company, not a public corporation with stock openly traded at Stock Exchanges and, thus, their books and real creditworthiness maybe impaired as things may not be as clean or clear as they should. I believe this is the stickiest point of all. I suspect the airline, though definitely profitable, is not as healthy or as profitable as it should to be able to finance such an expansion scheme on its own and it occasionally gets help from its parent company (mostly the MAMUSA break and car components division).

Hope this helps.

Thanks again Mr Civilav!

Well, as you say, S3 might not be able to buy one of those 763s. Now, in the hypotetical case that they go ahead and buy it, what procedures should they take? That's probably a US$30+ million...

For the moment, I don't really see any problems to see them lease aircraft. If they're offering a good service, then why get into further complications?

Cheers

Exactly, that's my question. Although, right now they are flying 4x weekly to MAD and 1 weekly to TFN. In December they will upgrade the MAD service and start the FNC route. I hope and they have to get another 763 within weeks.
